Year 11 Boys RL: Sirius Academy West 26 Beckfoot Thornton 10

The Sirius Academy Year 11 boys played in their first league match of the Yorkshire stages and managed to come away with a 26 – 10 victory over Beckfoot Thornton.

Sirius started the game with two errors on the second tackle in their first sets of six, which gave Beckfoot Thornton good field position in which the capitalised on for an early score to make it 6 – 0. As soon as Sirius settled down and started to play with a bit of confidence they got their rewards, a great run from Joe Aitcheson and then Brandon Sargesson got them near the tryline and the quick thinking of Jackson David Barker saw him scoot over from close range to make the score 6 – 4. Sirius defended well against a quick Beckfoot Thornton side with some good tackles coming in from Leon Stewart and Tom Borman on the flanks. Sirius managed to take a first half lead as Brandon Sargesson spotted a gap and raced over, Ben Canvass converted to make the halftime score 10 – 6 in favour of Sirius.

The second half saw both teams evenly matched and the game could have gone either the way, with the next try being the all-important one. Both defences were solid as the game progressed and neither side could get over the whitewash after twenty minutes. But in the final stages of the game the Sirius quality shone through as Joe Kennedy finished off a great move to score under the sticks to make it 16 -6. Credit to Beckfoot Thornton, they wouldn’t give up and gave themselves some hope as they went over in the corner to make to 16 – 10 with a tense five minutes left on the clock. Another good attacking set from Sirius saw them finish near the tryline and it was the quick thinking once again from dummy half Jackson David Barker to scoot over and seal the game at 22 – 10. But Sirius were not finished there, some great hands from Ben Canvass found Leon Stewart out wide who raced over in the corner. Liam Deyton nearly scored a spectacular conversion but it just fell short, making the final score 26 – 10 to Sirius Academy West. Next up for the boys is a trip to the National Finalists Castleford Academy on Tuesday, which will be their toughest test to date, but the boys are improving with each game and should go into this full of confidence in themselves.

Please congratulate the boys on their outstanding performance and attitude:-
