Great start to the season to the Year 7 Boys Soccer Team – solid 4-2 win

[28 Sep 2011]

Adam Kelsey, Callum Baker, Joe Boxall, Josh Jarvis, Alex Appleby, Jack Best, Mark Berry, Jak Langley (captain) Harry Knight, Martin Jude, Alfie Pougher, Nathan Voakes, Tom Jordan, Joe Coates and Mohammed Jumha represented the Academy and they were a huge credit to themselves and Sirius in attitude and appearance.

Sirius were a little slow out of blocks at the first whistle and St Marys where on top in the early part of the match. Sirius didn’t panic and continued to try and play passing football. After about 10 mins Josh Jarvis got pulled out of central defence by a tricky St Marys forward this left a gap which Marys pounced upon to score.

Sirius at this point leap into life and became very dominate with a back 4 of Callum Baker Joe Boxall and centre backs Josh Jarvis and Alex Appleby being totally dominant. Man of the Match Joe Boxall showed the way forward with some very strong tackling and over lapping play from left back.

Indeed it was one such tackle from Joe which led to the equaliser. Joe won a ball near the half way line he had no right to win and passed to Alfie Pougher. Alfie took off down the left wing played a one two with Jak Langley and he was into the box. Alfie dropped his shoulder to take the full back on the outside and buried his shot past St Marys keeper.

From this point on Sirius dominated the half with Nathan Voakes going close with a shot from outside the area. Jak Langley and Jack Best pulled the strings in midfield with Harry Knight and the ever available Martin Jude running some excellent lines.

It was another totally committed tackle by Joe Boxall which brought Sirius second. Joe was fouled just on the edge of St Mary’s box and our two centre backs Josh Jarvis and Alex Appleby made their way forward. Martin Jude whipped the ball in Josh Jarvis ran from deep and powered a downward header into the net, for a well-deserved lead.

Half time came and the second half start as the first had with Sirius slow to get into the game. A long ball of the top from St Marys saw them break away and net a good equaliser. For the next 10 mins or so St Marys were on top. Adam Kelsey made a number of very good saves and marshalled his troops in front of him will. Both Josh and Alex were very strong at this point.

Credit must go to the boys here on a warm evening they continued to play their passing game and some of the legs where going. Jack Best had ran his into in the ground and was replaced by Mohammed Jumba. Mohammed was straight into the game with some lovely touches which brought Sirius back to life.

With a run and the pass of the game Mohammed played in Harry Knight on the edge of the area. With his right foot Harry shot into the near corner to put Sirius 3-2 up with 10 left to play.

Tom Jordan came on up front for the tireless Joe Boxall and made instant impact with a strong tackle and good vision to bring in his team mates into the game. It was one such move that sealed the game for Sirius. Sirius attacked down our left and the ball was whipped into the box after a scramble in the box and a good save by their keeper the ball was hacked clear to our right back Callum Baker who hit an unstoppable shot from outside the area into the top of the net, to settle the nerves.
