Sirius Academy West 5 Malet Lambert 2

Sirius Academy West Year 9 Girls took on the National Finalists of 2017 – Malet Lambert. Its always an evenly matched game between the two sides, and this one was no different. Sirius started the game with Malet Lambert having three sets of six on their tryline, but the tenacious defence from the Sirius Academy West side was tremendous as they worked hard as a team to ensure they kept them out. On the Sirius West first set of six it was captain Lucy Parker who showed the way in attack with a burst through the defensive line and sprinted over 30 yards to score the first try of the match. Sirius managed to keep the big, strong Malet side out again on their own try line, but a penalty on the last tackle for offside saw Malet finally crash over. Sirius got the lead back after some strong runs from Leah Pearson, Nicole George and Tegan Purdon to put them in good field position for Lucy Parker to exploit the gaps in their defensive line to make it 2 – 1. Sirius made a couple of errors on the first tackle in their next sets of six and gifted Malet the equaliser. The scoreline at halftime was 2 – 2.

Sirius started the second half well with Talia Martinez and Louise Jessop making great yards forward. Leah Pearson was next to take the ball up and show her rugby knowledge with a fine offload in the tackle to Year 8 Jasmine Fielder who jinxed her way through the broken defensive line to make it 3 – 2.  From then on in it was all Sirius, with their defence being nothing short of outstanding, with some big hits from Nicole George and Year 8 Enola Aitcheson. With the ball in hand they were playing some great rugby, this time it was Nicole George who found her way over the tryline showing real strength and determination. Lucy Parker rounded off the scoring with a great individual try that saw her turn in the tackle and manage to put the ball down over the line. The scoreline ended with Sirius Academy West deserving the 5 – 2 victory.

Please congratulate the girls on their outstanding performance, it was a real team effort, with lots of skill and toughness on show to see off a very good Malet Lambert side and be crowned the Champions of Hull and earn a place in the Yorkshire Cup stages in March. The defence was incredible and the girls deserve a lot of praise:-

Lucy Parker, Lucy Stewart, Jess Wood, Louise Smith, Louise Jessop, Nicole George, Leah Pearson, Talia Martinez, Beth Waters, Tegan Purdon, Chantelle Dunn, Jasmine Fielder (Year 8), Enona Aitcheson (Year 8)
