OSL Works with Bright Stars at Sirius Academy

[28 Mar 2017]

A recent event involved us teaching students how to secure their dream job.

Sarah Taylor is our Resourcing Manager, a role that requires working closely with teachers and students across the region. Part of her recent outreach activity was getting involved in National Careers Week at Sirius Academy in Hull.

“Sirius runs an annual Interview Day,” Sarah explains. “It’s an excellent opportunity for students aged 16-18 to prepare for interviews, which comes in very useful when applying for university, apprenticeships, placements and jobs.”

Whilst some of the students that Sarah spoke to were studying traditional qualifications, others were taking HNCs, which are equivalent to two or three A-levels. Meanwhile, some were planning on going straight into the workplace after their studies, whereas others were set on furthering their education.

“I interviewed members of the sixth form about their career choices,” adds Sarah. “This was complemented by guidance around typical interview questions, creating a tailored approach for each student that will help them to improve their technique and delivery.”

Working first on a one-to-one basis and then meeting as a group, Sarah provided expert feedback in a format that was digestible and easy to action. This plays as large a role in building confidence as it does in shaping soft skills, simultaneously giving a feel for the current employment market. Sarah also took the opportunity to promote a career in engineering, in particular the need for more girls to explore STEM subjects and unleash their potential.

All of this tied in nicely with OSL’s collaboration with Sirius Academy North on Project Blyth, which sees members of our team helping students to design and build a Formula 24 car. The public can then watch more than 1,000 young racers take to Hull city centre’s streets on 16 July for an exciting UK City of Culture event.

OSL’s working relationship with the academy has recently become even stronger, with Neil Barnard, Senior Manager Operations, joining the Local Governing Board of Sirius Academy West.

“The facilities at Sirius are absolutely fantastic,” says Neil. “It’s the perfect learning environment for young people to develop their potential. The Academy is where every child achieves and believes in success.”
