Sirius Academy College Girls Rugby League
The Sirius Academy Girls College team travelled to Huddersfield in their first tournament of the year. There were two pools of three teams, with Sirius Academy being drawn in a pool with Wyke and Leeds City College.
Sirius Academy 0 Leeds City College 0
In a really good game of rugby no team managed to get over the try line as the defence on both sides was incredible. Lauren Clark and Georgia Travagli ran the ball in well to make good yards forward and the speedy Molly Bigby and Mia Duke looked to find gaps from the quick play the balls. In defence the girls really worked hard as a team with Paige Fletcher and Emily Savage putting in some good tackles out wide and Amelia Longden and Mia Duke down the middle. No team made one error in the full match, which any Super League team would have been proud of. Sirius thought they had won the game when they kept the ball alive, passing through the hands of six different players before Emily Savage was just held up short of the line in what would have been one of the best tries I have ever seen in school rugby. The draw in the end was a fair result and the game was played with great sportsmanship.
Sirius Academy 4 Wyke College 0
Next up was the Hull derby, and Sirius were certainly up for this one. It wasn't long before Sirius showed their class in attack as Mia Duke ran out from acting half back and outpaced the Wyke defence for the opening try. Some good defence from Sirius prevented Wyke from making any good yards, and on the back of the good defence it was Molly Bigby who went over with a great solo run. Some good drives forward from Saffron Jones and Aimee Harris got Sirius in a good position to send the impressive Amelia Longden crashing over from close range. Mia Duke rounded off the scoring in a convincing win from the Sirius side.
Sirius 0 Wakefield College 0 (Wakefield College won on Golden Try)
In the semi final Sirius played against Wakefield College, who were a very big, strong side. Sirius really defended well and in numbers to ensure their big players did not go over. It looked like Sirius had taken the lead but Saffron Jones was deemed to be short of the line. Shortly after the hard working Lauren Clark crashed over, but the referee called a knock on over the tryline. The game ended 0 - 0 and went into golden try. Wakefield started the ball and made good yards forward and on the last tackle their acting half back knocked on and everyone on the Sirius team stopped, however to everyone's amazement the referee said play on and Wakefield crashed over in the corner to take their place in the final.
Please congratulate the girls on their performance, attitude and behaviour. Next up for the girls is their first National League game away at Wakefield College on Wednesday 8th November, where the girls will certainly be looking to get revenge after todays result.
Special thanks to Richard Squires from Hull FC for his support with the team.
