Year 10 Rugby team close to finishing the season undefeated

[11 Sep 2011]

The Sirius Academy Year 10 Rugby team came close to finishing the season undefeated and adding the Carnegie Champion Schools National Cup to their already won, Yorkshire Cup and Hull Schools League and Cup. The team despite missing several players through holiday, produced an outstanding performance to push Brooksbank High (Calderdale) all the way, and on another day could have won the title.

The game started strongly for Sirius with Liam Robinson and Ryan Brown working hard in a tough opening 15 minutes. However Brooksbank were 1st on the scoreboard to take a 4-0 lead. Led by the ever reliable captain Jansin Turgut, Sirius fought back, with good yards from the solid Steven Marshall and Will Collier setting the position for the Man of the Match Jordan Abdull to crash over and convert from outwide for a 6-4 lead to Sirius. On the stroke of half-time Brooksbank went over to take a 10-6 lead into the 2nd half.

Again Sirius showed the team spirit and determination that has typified their season to fight back, with Macaulay Hallett, Stephen Batty and Andy Ogden leading from the front. Again it was Abdull to show his power and skill by dummying his way over and again adding a magnificent touchline goal to give Sirius a 12-10 lead. Back again came Brooksbank to hit Sirius and retake the lead 16-12 with 15 minutes remaining. With the weather becoming worse and the pitch gathering puddles, the likes of the two outstanding Year 9 pupils, Harry Tyson-Wilson and George Scottow continued to make breaks, supported by some big defence from James Buttery and Abdull. A dangerous kick from Abdull who retrieved the ball and fed Buttery to cross in the corner with Abdull again somehow converting from the touchline into the rain to give Sirius a 18-16 lead with 9 minutes remaining. Brooksbank began to then force the game with the back three of Collier, Liam Gordon and Marshall holding strong, however the lack of numbers eventually told on Sirius who conceded two late tries to deny them glory and fall to a 28-18 defeat.
