Sirius Sports Stars Cheerleading Talent Camp

[05 Feb 2018]

On Friday 2nd February 2018, over 80 talented year 5 students joined Mr Gordon, Miss Shaw and her fantastic team of student leaders in the sports hall to learn the basics of cheerleading. For many people, the word ‘cheerleading’ conjures up images of pom poms and dancing on football sidelines. However, this day was spent about the element which comprise to make an allstar cheerleading routine.

In the morning, students were introduced to the sport through miniature workshops led by the cheerleading team themselves as well as visitors from the Imperial Storm and Diamond White Stars cheerleading programmes which are both based in Hull. These workshops focused on stunting, pyramid building, dance, jumps and tumbles.

In the afternoon, students were challenged to create their own cheerleading routine with support from their primary teachers and student leaders, combining all that they learnt in the morning session. Whilst all performances were very impressive for just an hour of work, two particular routines stood out and scooped the prizes; Newington Academy for their excellent showmanship and Francis Askew Primary School for their superb execution of all skills.

A special thank you to all of the leaders who acted as excellent ambassadors for both the Academy and the Sport itself, Gentah and Leah from Imperial Storm and Ella Beedham, ex sixth-form, from the Diamond White Stars.
