UNDER 16s CROWNED CITY FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS WITH AN EMPHATIC 3-0 WIN!
The Year 11 Sirius Football Team were involved as League Winners in the Hull City Championship Play-Off Final against main rivals Malet Lambert yesterday afternoon.
The two teams have dominated their year groups from year seven with many encounters between the east and west winners. The most memorable from our point of view being our success and victory over Malet at the KC Stadium when the boys were in Year 9. The most disappointing being last season when in the semi-final of the Hull School's Cup the boys drew 2-2 after extra-time but were cruelly beaten on penalties. The boys were also beaten this season at the same stage 1-4 although we did have key players missing.
With these bitter and sweet memories there was a lot of pride at stake and with this being the last academy game for the boys and myself wanted nothing more than a win against this particular opposition.
We started slowly and Malet were the brighter side hitting the bar in the first few minutes. That was a warning and a wake-up call to our boys that business was resumed and if they were not on their game they were going to be in trouble. However, our boys responded magnificently and with a maturity I was proud to witness.
The team were led as ever by their captain Alex Douglas who reads the game brilliantly and covers all angles - with the rest of the team being driven by the 'popular and nuisance' that we all know is Kieren Jones- a dynamo and terrier to the opposition -always 'snapping' and working hard to close the opposition down- and with the presence and bulk of Harry Tyson leading the forward line the team along with Tom Wilson in goal had a backbone and structure throughout the team to give our opponents something to worry about.
Sirius took over after that early scare and their pressure paid off when Kieren Jones placed the ball over the Malet keeper and into the net.
Malet now looked and played as if they were worried with our boys continuing to dominate the game with Liam Harris, Tom Williams, Kieren Easter working hard in midfield to get the ball forward and create many opportunities.
We hit the bar and then the post and for a moment I had one of those 'grey moments' that seem to cover my head these days and couldn't believe our misfortune at this time. But the pressure paid off when Tom Hance calmly placed a shot which crept into the far area of the goal. Game on! How would our opponents respond? 2-0 at half-time!
The defence in Alex Douglas , Sam Leach, Oliver Anscombe, and the energetic Brandon Hepworth maintained their shape and resistance throughout and made it very difficult for our opponents to break them down. Indeed it was a magnificent team performance and one to be very proud to be part..
The pressue continued on Malet throughout most of the second half until their resistance was totally broken when Kieren Jones was brought down. Penalty! Sam Leach stood up to the plate and slotted the penalty into the corner of the goal! Game over!
Liam Sigurdsson and John Godwin along with Ben Arbon replaced players in the second-half adding the reserves and 'artillery' required by the team to continue their 'assault' on the Malet goal!
A fabulous final victory and well deserved!
The boys have been brilliant from Year 7 (although at times some have driven my patience to the limit!) and I would like to thank them personally for their efforts and for the 'sweet' and successful times we had and shared together over the years. Well done boys!
Thanks to Dean Jennings for his support with the team and to Jon Flatman for his support of all 3 of our teams who were in Play-Off Finals.
