Year 10 boys battle into National Cup Quarter-Finals!
The Sirius Academy Year 10 Rugby team battled through to the Quarter-Finals of the Carnegie Champion Schools National Cup after a tough victory over a big and physical St Bernards team from Cumbria. Sirius at times played some excellent Rugby but struggled to contain the physically bigger Bernards side, however they showed great spirit to eventually progress into the last 8 of the competition.
The game started well for Sirius with strong runs from Liam Platten, captain Jamie Warcup and Tom Hance setting the position for Liam Harris to kick through and Peter Butcher to pounce and score for 4-0 Sirius. However Bernards hit back quickly to level at 4-4, before good set-up play from Benn Arbon and Harry Tyson-Wilson split the Bernards defence which created a gap for Brandon Hepworth to sprint through and score to put Sirius back up 8-4. Back came Bernards to level at 8-8 with another try from tight around the play the ball. From the kick-off a good chase by Kieran Jones, saw Arbon pick up and quickly scoot through the defence to put Sirius 12-8 up, however another Bernards try saw the half-time score at 12-12.
After identifying areas of improvement, Sirius started the 2nd half strongly, with Liam Sigurdsson, Josh Jackson and Hepworth making good yards and Tyson-Wilson, Jones and Harris linking well to find runners in Butcher, Louis Carmichael, Ben Ramsay and Warcup who battled bravely through injury. A Tyson-Wilson kick was well chased by Harris who collected to score with Jones kicking the goal for a 18-12 lead. Things got better for Sirius when Jones smartly stepped through the defence and added the extras for a 24-12 lead, and perhaps Sirius should have gone on to add more points. However Bernards stunned Sirius with three quick tries to move 28-24 ahead with eight minutes remaining. Sirius refused to panic and created sustained pressure on the Bernards line, and again Jones stepped through the defence to dummy his way over and kick the extras to put Sirius 30-28 up with two minutes left. In the final set of six, Sirius moved the ball wide, and Jon Godwin finished a well worked try by bravely diving in at the corner to give Sirius a well earnt 34-28 win.
Special thanks for Rachel Gay for her support and assistance with the team.
Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:
