Year 10 Girls Rugby – much improved performance

[26 Apr 2013]

After year 7, 8 , 9 and 11’s girls regional Carnegie School Championships that had all taken place over the last few weeks, it was year 10’s that were last to play in their age group. After their last outing, a much improved performance was needed and they did not disappoint. In a league of 4 teams, their opponents were Settle College, Corpus Christie and St Wilfreds in three 15 minute games.

Sirius 12 Corpus Christie 16
In a very evenly matched game, Sirius did themselves proud and was unfortunate not to come away with a draw, as they conceded a try in the last play of the game. The attack by the Sirius girls was very good, with Georgia Garrod and Louise Turner taking the ball up well, making space for acting half back Shannon Kay, who scooted over from close range. Then it was captain Paris Turpin who was next on the scoresheet to make the scores 12 a piece after converting both tries. The defence on the line from Sirius to keep Corpus Christie out for a set of six was superb, with Mel Mcann, Robyn Everett and Abbie Longley looking strong in the tackle. But after a knock on from Sirius Academy, Corpus Christie gained some good field position and found some space outwide to take the victory.

Sirius 12 St Wilfreds 24
It was just one of the girls who scored all four tries for St Willfreds, everytime she got the ball she used her size, pace and strength to power through the Sirius defensive line. But Sirius would not give up without a fight and got two tries of their own, some good hands down the middle of the park from Kourtney Turner and Tayla Kemp found Shannon Kay backing up to go over. The second try also came from Shannon Kay after another smart scoot from acting half back.

Sirius 0 Settle College 18
Sirius were starting to tire in the last game, but gave maximum effort, with year 9 Megan Kay taking the ball up on several occasions. Shannon Armstrong moved more in to the centre of the field and made an immediate impact in defence and attack. Some good tackles were made when the girls got numbers in, with Courtney Ferrie, Courtney Thompson and Chelsea Marshall at the heart of it. But the Settle team proved too big and strong and powered over for three quick tries.

The girls effort and commitment was outstanding, and they surprised themselves on occasions at how well they could play in attack and defence. The improvements was immense from the last time they played, which was very pleasing!

Please congratulate the squad on their performance and attitude:-
