Year 10 team produce brave effort in Nationals!

[18 Dec 2013]

The Year 10 Rugby League team produced a committed display to earn the respect of current National Cup champions, St Edmond Arrowsmith High (Wigan) before losing out 34-6 in their 1st Round National Cup match. The team playing at this level for the very first time battled hard and shocked their opponents as the match remained scoreless for the first 20 minutes, however the sheer size and physicality of the Edmond outfit wore down the Sirius boys. The team now look forward to their Yorkshire Cup Semi-Final against St John Fisher (Dewsbury) and also the defence of their Hull Schools Cup later on in the year.

The match started with the Sirius forwards matching the Edmond forwards in a tough battle up the middle, led by the two outstanding Year 9 students in George Tyson-Wilson and Kai Thorpe. Defensively Brad McLoughlin and Ray Brown worked overtime to take on the big forwards, with Lochlan Fitzgerald and Kenan Stephenson kicking intelligently in to space for Luke Salas, Callum Magee and Connah Oliver to chase. A quick try from Edmond put Sirius 6-0 down after 20 minutes however back battled Sirius with Brandon Eastwood, Tom Greenham and Jon Mills taking the ball up strongly. Two crucial quick tries in the last 5 minutes of the 1st half put Sirius 16-0 down at half-time.

Credit to Sirius who came out battling in the 2nd half, James Ducker and Brad Elliott matched the Edmond forwards again with Alec Beaumont moving the ball well away from the middle of the pitch. Two tries off kicks gave Edmond a 28-0 lead and when they scored a good try quickly after it was looking ominous for the Sirius boys at 34-0 with 15 minutes left. Again full credit to the boys who refused to give in and deservedly scored when Mills crashed over with Stephenson goaling for the final scoreline.

Man of the match went to George Tyson-Wilson.
