Sirius Academy West 18 St John Fisher 16

Sirius Academy West Year 7 Boys have made it through to the 1/4 final of the National RL Schools Cup Final after an extremely close and tough home game against St John Fisher from Wigan.

The boys started the game in fine form with a great defensive set, and then on their first attack of the game Jay Dawson showed his speed by rounding the St John Fisher defence and going over for an early try, Matty Grant converted to make it 6 – 0. From then on in it was very evenly matched with both sides completing their sets well. St John Fisher got back in the game when the smart speedy hooker saw a gap out wide and scooted over in the corner to make it 6 – 4. Sirius West went over again just before the halftime break some good yards from Cohen Cass put Sirius in good field position and a great kick from Billy Whittle got the Sirius side a repeat set, where they scored on the second tackle after a great run from Clifford Appich, a quick play the ball and outstanding cut out pass from Matty Grant found Jay Dawson in space for him to go over near the corner, a great kick from Matty Grant to make it 12 – 4 at the halftime break with Sirius in control of the game.

The second half was a different story as St John Fisher controlled the ball a lot better than Sirius and got a try back early on in the second half to make the scoreline 12 – 10. Sirius had chances with the ball in hand but could not look after it well enough. St John Fisher capitalised on the amount of ball they had and went in under the sticks to make it 12 – 16 in their favour with only 9 minutes on the clock. Sirius managed to look after the ball and complete a set, a great kick from captain Alfie Wilson caused St John Fisher to knock on near their own tryline. From the resulting set of the six  the impressive Cohen Cass, who was player of the match managed to get the ball down somehow with 4 players around him. Matty Grant held his nerve to put Sirius back in front by 2 points with 2 minutes on the clock. Sirius ran in 5 scoots and a kick and then the whistle went as Sirius celebrated their hard fought victory.

This was not the best performance from this talented Sirius Academy West Year 7 Boys side, but as they saying goes, the sign of a good team is to not play to your full potential but still win the game! The boys will now face a team from Wales, who finished top in their group and are renowned for being a top rugby school in the Swansea area.

Please congratulate the boys on reaching the 1/4 final of the Nationals, 2 games away from playing at Wembley Stadium before the Challenge Cup!
