Year 7 Girls Football Team lose out in Round 5 of the National Cup

[05 May 2016]

The Year 7 Girls travelled to De Lisle Academy, Loughborough yesterday in the 5th round of the National 9-a-side Football Cup . Unfortunately some key players were unavailable for this important cup game with  Isabella Taylor and Jess Toner having to drop out of the squad last minute through illness, and with Kadie Laws being rules out with a broken arm, only 9 of the girls travelled to the fixture.

De Lisle Academy 3 Sirius Academy West 0

The game started evenly matched, with both sides struggling to create any real chances. Alisha Dayes was working hard on her up front and chasing down every ball that was played through, but unfortunately the support was not quick enough to get to her to cause any real problems going forward. Alyx Worth was covering every blade of grass as she got back to defend and also tried to join in the attack where possible. The deadlock was broken after 15 minutes when Sirius were caught trying to play the ball out from the back, and when a loose ball was played across goal the De Lisle player was there first to slot home. De Lisle extended their lead shortly after, the ball was won back in midfield too easily and the resulting attack ended in another goal to the home side.  The scoreline at halftime was 2 – 0 to De Lisle Academy.

Sirius started the second half brightly as Ellie Robertson played a more forward thinking role with Alisha Dayes. Georgia Coggin was coming into the game more and played some good balls through, but unfortunately Sirius could not capitalise on the amount of good pressure they had in the De Lisle half. The new look defence with Abbie Brennan partnering with captain Phoebe Armstrong and Rachel Robinson were looking solid, limiting De Lisles opportunities in front of goal. Phoebe Armstrong was enjoying her new role as captain and was leading by example with some fantastic tackles. Paige Collingwood was brought more into the middle and looking more effective. De Lisle started to get on top in the game again, but Lucy Sainty in goal made some outstanding saves to keep the scoreline at 2 – 0. As Sirius went all out attack in the last five minutes De Lisle sealed the game with a superb 20 yard shot into the top corner to make the final score 3 – 0.

Please congratulate the girls on getting to the 5th Round of the National Cup, this is a massive achievement, they should be very proud of themselves. I am sure if we would have had our full squad available today we could have gone even further in the competition.
