Year 7 Girls Rugby - Yorkshire Finals
After being crowned the Hull Schools Champions last month, the Sirius Academy West Year 7 Girls represented Hull in the Yorkshire Tournament as Castleford Academy. They were drawn in a very tough group with Castleford Academy, St John Fisher and Holy Family.
Castleford Academy 3 Sirius Academy West 1
In a very evenly matched game against a very good Castleford side, the game could have gone either way. Castleford were first on the scoresheet as their prop forward crashed over from close range. Sirius defended well and managed to keep the big, strong Castleford players out for a few sets of six. The score was levelled shortly after when Enola Aitcheson showed her pace to round the defence and score in the corner to set up for a tense finish. The Sirius girls deserved a lot of credit for their defence, but when they dropped the ball near their own tryline there was no stopping their forward for crashing over again. As Sirius tried to find the equaliser they forced their passes and when one went to ground it was capitilised on by Castleford as they sealed the game and 3 – 1 on the final whistle.
Sirius Academy West 5 St John Fisher 5
In a very evenly matched game, this one could not find a winner as both teams attacked well and generally scored if they completed the set. The five tries were shared out between the impressive Paige Walker, Enola Aitcheson (2), Jasmine Fielder and Holly Paige. Sirius West thought they had won this one but St John Fisher scored in the final stages of the game, which meant Sirius needed to win their final game to finish second.
Sirius Academy 2 Holy Family 2
As the Sirius team started to tire after two very impressive performances, they started to fall off tackles quite easily and Holy Family managed to go a try up in the first few minutes. Sirius replied immediately after Maddie O Connor showed her power and strength to get over the tryline. Holy Family got a few penalties for high tackles by the Sirius side and that pushed them up the field, and in their resulting set of six they went over. Sirius needed to win this one and went all out attack, they got their rewards when the tough Megan Britton got up after a high tackle on her and took the ball in immediately to go over and equalise. This was too little too late as Sirius needed the win so unfortunately did not get through to the semi final.
Please congratulate the girls on their outstanding effort, attitude and performance. Considering this is their first year in rugby their future for Sirius Academy looks very promising.
