Year 7 Rugby boys off to a flyer in terrible conditions!!!

The Sirius Academy West Year 7 boys Rugby team made a great start to their school rugby careers with a hard-fought 14-6 win over a talented Longcroft School side. The game played in a terrible weather conditions with constant rain throughout, saw both team emerge with great credit and should they meet again later in the year, it will no doubt be a tremendous game to watch!

Sirius started the match playing up the hill and into the driving rain, with the big Longcroft forwards looking eager to make inroads. However the Sirius boys had other ideas, led by the outstanding Kai Jenman who tackled everything in sight, they matched Longcroft throughout a tight opening 15 minutes. In difficult conditions the back-line of Kai McNeil, Joe Wood, Bradley McCarthy, Keenan Gibson and Lyndon Miller took every ball and made strong yards whilst making some excellent tackles wide out. The forwards led by Jenman marched forward throughout with Jack Horsfield, Will Palmer and Bradley Wright proving handfuls with their strong running games. On the stroke of half-time the Longcroft fullback spotted a gap and went the length of the pitch to put Sirius 6-0 down however Sirius hit back immediately with the impressive Daire Kemp who captained the side, crashing through several tackles to go over and with a Harry Wilson conversion, Sirius went into the break level at 6-6.

Sirius opened the 2nd half with ball control the key message, and they did just that. Kemp stepped up after good work from half-backs Jakes Matthews and Charlie Matchett, to send Wood over out-wide with an excellent cut-out pass to take a 10-6 lead. Lochlan Wilson and Mason Creighton entered the forwards with great effect with their energy proving vital in making Sirius good yards forward with Harry Wilson starting to spot gaps in the tiring defence to make several good runs from dummy-half. With the game still in the balance, it was fitting that Jenman sealed the win with a typically brave run seeing him crash over low down to secure an excellent 14-6 win!

Please congratulate the boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:
