Year 7 Rugby team lose out in Yorkshire Cup Final!

[11 Mar 2012]

The Sirius Academy Year 7 Rugby team lost out to a strong Honley (Huddersfield) side in the Final of the Yorkshire Cup. The boys were a credit to the Academy in terms of their effort and attitude but unfortunately came up against a team containing individuals with greater size and speed and these differences told as one player from the opposition scored 5 tries. The boys now look forward to the National Cup 1st Round match against Wade Deacon (Widnes) and also the Hull Schools Cup qualifying rounds.

The game started well for Sirius with Kai Thorpe’s kick giving them early pressure, however despite strong running from Brad Elliot and George Tyson-Wilson the boys could not convert this into points. With his first touch of the ball the Honley centre sprinted the length of the pitch, and this was to happen another 2 times in the first half, with Sirius battling bravely and gaining their reward with a good spot from Josh Kirby sending Josh Atkinson over in the corner, to leave Sirius 22-4 down at half-time.

The 2nd half saw Sirius again battling to contain the stronger Honley players, with Josh Lomax and Ben Macklin leading from the front, and Elliot causing trouble. Again Honley made yards at will and added further tries to take the score to 36-4, before Thorpe crashed over for a deserved try to leave Sirius with a 36-8 defeat.

Special thanks to the staff who attended in support including Cosi Basile, Simon Jewitt, Jon Flatman, Martin Smith, Tom McLaughlin, Viki Stephenson, and any others I may have missed!

Please congratulate the boys on their performance, success and attitude:
