Year 7 Rugby team make 1st ever Final!

[24 Apr 2015]

The Sirius Academy Year 7 Rugby team produced a fantastic performance to defeat Winifred Holtby 42-4 in their Hull Schools Semi-Final clash, which now sees the Sirius boys make their 1st Final as a school team. The boys cheered on by a big crowd of students, took control of the game early and refused to let go as they continually put points on the score-board. The team now face their toughest test of the year when they come up against Yorkshire Cup champions, Malet Lambert, a team that have lost only once all season in the National Cup Semi-Final.

Sirius started the match on the front foot and never looked back after Leon Stewart had opened his account, using his speed and strength, something the opposition struggled to deal with, with Lewis Wilson adding the 1st of his 7 successful goals. Sam McAuley was impressing around the ruck, spotting gaps and making good yards, with Ali Alsherife, Connor Foster and Lewis Walker making good yards with every carry. Leon Dalee, in his debut match for the team, showed some excellent touches out-wide with Kristian McMahon, Nathaniel Walshaw and Sam Smith looking dangerous with the ball. Tom Wilkinson was next over, burrowing over from close range, before Stewart added his 2nd. Holtby crossed for their solitary reply, however Wilson soon got Sirius back going with a smart dummy to cross for a 24-4 half-time lead.

Sirius continued in a similar vein at the start of the 2nd half, with Stewart scoring the try of the match, catching a kick on his own try-line before sprinting the length of the pitch to allow Wilkinson to goal. Joe Grant was impressive again with a tireless display, with Luke Taylor making some strong runs forward. Full-back Harry Blackham again showed his superb footwork and speed, scoring two quick-fire tries from long distance, with the defence unable to get a hand on him, with his final try closing the game off for the final 42-4 score-line.

A special mention to Year 10 student Robbie Laughton who refereed the match in what was his 1st official match since passing his RFL Officiating course.

Special thanks to Rach Gay and 6th Former Harry Brigham for their support with the team and to Martin Smith, Patrick Davidson and Cosi Basile for their support.
