Year 7 Rugby team remain undefeated to reach Yorkshire Cup Final!

[04 Mar 2012]

The Sirius Academy Year 7 Rugby team added to their fantastic achievements in their short Sirius careers by becoming the 1st ever Year 7 team from this school to reach the Carnegie Champion Schools Year 7 Yorkshire Cup Final. The boys again were a credit to the Academy, producing a clinical 1st half performance that put them in total control of the match, before remaining disciplined in a solid 2nd half performance. The opposition in Earlsheaton (Kirklees), had no answer to the 1st half performance, although they continued to battle until the final whitsle.

The game started well for Sirius with forwards Tom Jordan, Kai Thorpe and Josh Lomax making good yards, with George Tyson-Wilson producing an excellent performance in the middle of the pitch with his non-stop tackling and taking the ball forward. Early opportunities were difficult to make, with Callum Whilsher looking dangerous every time he got the ball, as well as the outstanding Josh Atkinson who continually took pressure off the forwards with his willingness to work. The 1st try came from Josh Kirby, who was impressive throughout with his darting runs from acting-half, with one of these allowing him to spot a gap and crash over, with Thorpe adding a conversion. Thorpe was next over, using his pure strength and power to crash over, before converting his own try. With ten minutes remaining of the half, Sirius continued to throw the ball around, with Lloyd Cass linking in well, and Jordan Webb and Liam Waudby seeking the ball. Brad Elliot was next over, sprinting round the defence for a 16-0 lead, before Whilsher scored the try of the match, with superb hands from Sirius creating space for him to cross outside, for a half-time score of 20-0.

The 2nd half started with Earlsheaton putting pressure on Sirius, however the outstanding Harry Whittles combined with half-back partner Joseph Coates to send Elliot away from a full length try, allowing Whittles to convert for 26-0 Sirius. Earlsheaton to their credit continued to battle away, with strong defence from Joseph Thompson and Jay Kirkland. An Earlsheaton try pulled the score back to 26-4, before a Whittles kick caused havoc allowing Whilsher to pick up the loose ball and dive over for a 32-4 lead. With time ticking down, the introduction of Kieran Sewell injected spark into Sirius with his clever runs from dummy-half, with one run creating the space for the excellent Thorpe to crash over, before a late Earlsheaton consolation gave Sirius an outstanding 36-10 victory and their place in Sirius history with the Yorkshire Final place.

Their opponents in the Final will be Honley (Huddersfield), in a game which is hoped will be played in Hull during next week.

Please congratulate the following boys on their continued success, attitude and behaviour:
