Year 7 Rugby team through to Hull Cup Semi-Final!

The Sirius Academy Year 7 Rugby team produced an outstanding 2nd half performance to run away with their Hull Schools Cup Quarter-Final match against Kelvin Hall. The team had faced Kelvin in the League competition and had fought to a 6-6 draw, so they knew the task before them would be tough. The team fully deserved their victory and now go onto face Winifred Holtby for the right to face Yorkshire Cup champions, Malet Lambert in the Hull Final.

The match, Sirius’ 1st in over three months, began with the boys showing signs of rustiness, with several unforced errors allowing Kelvin to score early to lead 4-0. As the boys began to settle down, the steadiness of Joe Grant, Alex Dunne, Connor Foster and Tom Wilkinson saw the team go forward well, with Lewis Wilson and Sam Smith using the ball well. The two stand-out performers of the 1st half were undoubtedly, Ali Alsherife and Leon Stewart who with their strong and aggressive running, made several breaks, with Alsherife sprinting the full length of the pitch before been hauled down just short. Stewart got Sirius on the board showing great speed to break through and finish well with Wilson goaling for 6-4. Just before half-time Kelvin struck back to lead 8-6.

With the message of ball control and line speed in defence made clear, the team did this and much more to completely dominate the half. Sam McAuley led the way from hooker, using his smartness to dictate the game, with Wilson taking on the role of organiser, finding his runners well and using the ball intelligently. Wide out, Tom Horner and Kristian McMahon were outstanding in defence, with Aidan Rands, Harrison Gibson, Kieran Simpson and Nathaniel Walshaw impressing. Harry Blackham came more into the game, using his footwork well with Luke Taylor strong in the middle however it was Stewart who was next over, sprinting away from 70 metres to score. Wilson was next over with two quick-fire tries of his own, dummying his way through and adding the extras for 24-8. McAuley scored a cheeky try, showing a big dummy before diving over unopposed before Wilkinson dived over from close-range, showing great strength with Wilson again goaling both to finish with 6 successes from as many attempts to leave Sirius as 36-8 winners.

Special thanks to Rach Gay for her help with the team and to Janice Hall for driving and supporting the boys.

Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:

Harry Blackham, Nat Walshaw, Leon Stewart, Tom Horner, Kristian McMahon, Lewis Wilson, Sam McAuley, Ali Alsherife, Sam Smith, Alex Dunne, Tom Wilkinson, Connor Foster, Joe Grant, Kieran Simpson, Aidan Rands, Luke Taylor, Harrison Gibson.
