Year 7 Rugby team win 1st ever match!

The Sirius Academy Year 7 Rugby team got their school rugby careers off to a successful start with an entertaining 16-6 win over Kelvin Hall. The team played some outstanding rugby in the victory, and despite a lot of the team giving away physical advantages to their opponents, the team's defence was excellent. The boys now have two matches left to secure qualification to the Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup.

The match started with Sirius defended after errors however Ryan Coult and Kye Green led the way with some great defensive tackles to stop the bigger Kelvin forwards. When Sirius did get the ball in hand, half-backs Jack Hassard and Will Beaumont linked up smartly with Dylan Booth timing his runs into the game well. Out wide Joe-Michael Laden, Jackson Davis-Barker and Harrison Bark made strong yards with wingers Taylor Eastwood and Jack Webb looking to get involved at every chance. 1st over for Sirius was Laden who showed excellent strength to break through from 30 metres out and score wide out. With Lennon Milner and Jack Wilson-Grey making strong runs off good distribution from Connor Young, Sirius began to play with a more expansive style and this resulted in Eastwood scoring with an excellent finish for an 8-0 half-time lead.

The 2nd half saw changes with Harry Pougher coming on to make some barnstorming runs and Billy Gill showing great bravery to take some difficult kicks and return the ball to Kelvin. Eastwood was next over after Hassard created a gap for him and he raced away to score for 12-0 before Kelvin hit back with a converted try for 12-6. Zac Wilcockson and Ben Canvas steadied the Sirius team with some strong drives and in the dying seconds Davis-Barker dived over from dummy-half to give Sirius their win.

Special thanks to David Gordon for driving the mini-bus and supporting the boys.
