Year 8 Boys make it through to the next round of the RL Yorkshire Plate

Sirius Academy West Year 8 Boys made it through to the next round of the Yorkshire Plate with a convincing win over Archbishop Sentamu. The attack from Sirius in the first ten minutes was superb, completing every set of six in very windy conditions. Leon Stewart was first to go over under the sticks with a fine individual try. Ali Alsherife was working hard in the middle of the park in attack and defence and got a well deserved try as he showed real power as he crashed through the defensive line. The tries kept coming as the Sirius side controlled the ball well, making Archbishop Sentamu stretched in the defence and the gaps started to appear, which Leon Stewart took full advantage of to get over for his second try of the game. Tom Wilkinson and Joe Grant were taking the ball up well, and the distribution from Sam McAuley at the acting half back position was outstanding. It was just a matter of time before Leon Stewart got his hat-trick as he showed his pace and strength after some good work from the half backs of Mason Palmer and Lewis Wilson. In the final stages of the first half the Sirius team switched off when defending on their own line and conceded their first try of the game, making the half-time score 24 – 6 with Lewis Wilson converting 4 of the tries.
The second half started well for Sirius and they scored three quick tries in the opening five minutes. Connor Foster scored  a good try after some great support play, before Ali Alsherife got his second try of the game showing good determination to get over the tryline. A great kick on the last tackle was followed up well by Leon Stewart who was first to react to the loose ball to extend the scorline even further. Archbishop threw everything at Sirius, but the defence was working well and moving up together in a line, keeping them out for a full set of six on their own tryline. Leon Sewell capped off a fine performance with the final try of the game, making the scoreline 44 – 6, which will see the talented Year 8 side progress into the next round of the Yorkshire Plate.
Please congratulate the team on their success, attitude and behaviour:-

Y6 Virtual Open Night - Transition Update

Due to the current restrictions that we all face we are unable to host our annual Open Night for prospective pupils and their parents/carers. We acknowledge the important decision that you all are set to make in selecting your preference for secondary education in 2021 and are keen for that decision to be an informed one.

Thus, we are hosting a Virtual Open Night on Thursday 8th October 2020 for all pupils that are considering Sirius Academy West as their destination for September 2021. The evening will feature the premiere of our own short film and also provide additional links to other informative videos. These will include introductions to key staff, testimonials from current students, overviews of the varied subjects and courses available at the academy, and an all access tour following a current student during an academy day.

The event will also promote the academy’s thorough transition programme that seeks to remove barriers to movement from Year 6 to Year 7 and allow all pupils to thrive on arrival. Despite the enforced closure in March, many pupils in our local Primary Schools have already started this journey with themed visits to the academy in Year 5.

The academy has been heavily oversubscribed for places within Year 7 in recent years and we expect this to be repeated again this year. We encourage pupils and parents to not miss out!

For any additional information regarding the event, and/or details regarding the transition process, please contact Mr Gordon on (01482) 352939. All of the Year 6 pupils in our local Primary Schools will soon receive individual invites to their evening.
