Year 8 Girls through to Yorkshire Finals

[12 Feb 2017]

The Year 8 Sirius Academy West Girls have made it through the Yorkshire Finals with two wins and one draw in the Hull Competition. The Year 8 side had 3 brand new players in the team as well as 2 Year 7 Girls, who did extremely well playing a year group up.

Sirius Academy West 4 Sirius Academy North 2
The Sirius derby was up first, and it was the West side who dominated the first half with three tries unanswered. Sirius North were looking after the ball well in their sets of six, but the West side was managing to keep them out with good defence. Lucy Sainty got the West side off to a good start with a powerful, unstoppable run that saw her go over 50 yards to score the first try. Chelsea Anderson was also looking dangerous on the attack and powered over to double the lead. Just before the halftime break Georgia Coggin jinxed her way through with great agility to extend the lead to 3 – 0 . Changes were made in the second half giving debuts to Tarri Trafford, Ruby Dunn and Demi Robson who were all just starting to understand the game. Sirius North capitalised on the gaps in the defence and went over for two tries in quick succession as the Sirius West side made some unforced errors. Lucy Sainty was brought back on to organise things and made a big impact in defence and attack, managing to score the try that would secure the game for West and make the final score 4 – 2.

Sirius Academy West 8 St Marys 6
The attack of the Sirius West team was exceptional in this game, but unfortunately the defence struggled to contain a few of the St Marys big strong players. Two tries from Lucy Sainty, one from Georgia Coggin and a debut try to Tarri Trafford in the corner saw Sirius go over for four well-deserved tries, but St Marys replied to all our tries with tries of their own to make the scoreline 4 – 4. The team that controlled the ball best in the second half would go on and win the game, and it was Sirius West who did just that, Alyx Worth and Georgia Coggin extended the scoreline to 6 – 4 before ST Marys went over again, Luct Sainty and Georgia Coggin scored another try each to make it 8 – 5 as St Marys crashed over for a consolation try at the final whistle, but it was too little too late as Sirius West celebrated their 8 – 6 victory.

Sirius Academy West 6 Archbishop Sentamu 6
Both teams were already through the Yorkshire Finals, but had to fight it out for first place. Both teams again looked good in attack but struggled in defence in this real cat and mouse game of you score then we score. Lucy Sainty, Nicole George and Georgia Coggin went over in the first half as the score at the break was 3 – 3. Both teams made mistakes in the second half in which the opposition took full advantage. Lucy Sainty and Chelsea Anderson scored for West, but it was Archbishop that looked to have clinched the game at 6 – 5, until Lucy Parkers quick thinking saw her go over in the corner to make the scores level just before the final whistle.

Sirius Academy and Archbishop Sentamu both go through to the Yorkshire Finals representing Hull, but all four teams today were outstanding in a very evenly matched competition with some outstanding rugby played. All the girls should be very proud of their performance.
