Year 8 Rugby team make 2nd successive Yorkshire Cup Final!

[06 Mar 2013]

The Sirius Academy Year 8 Rugby team followed on from last season’s success when they became the first side from the Academy to make both the Year 7 and Year 8 Yorkshire Cup Finals. The team have shown great maturity in their matches so far this year, and again this was clear when they defeated rivals St Marys Sports College for the first time, gaining revenge for last season’s Hull Schools Cup Final defeat. The team now look forward to a Final against either Castleford Academy (Wakefield) or Honley (Huddersfield), the team that defeated Sirius in last season’s Yorkshire Final.

The match began at a great pace for Sirius with forwards George Tyson-Wilson, Kai Thorpe and Brad Elliot getting the team on the front foot. Early pressure told with Thorpe and Josh Lomax crossing early for an 8-0 lead. However back came Marys, who as always refused to lie down and showed their own quality by crossing twice to take a 10-8 lead after fifteen minutes. Credit to Sirius who refused to panic, and with Josh Kirby controlling the play the ball well, and Jay Kirkland, Kieran Sewell and the impressive Josh Atkinson making good yards, Sirius worked their way back into the game. Harry Whittles turned creator for the next try, with a cross-field kick allowing Kirkland to cross with Thorpe goaling. Thorpe followed this with his 2nd try after good work from Callum Wiilsher with Whittles goaling for a 20-10 half-time lead.

The 2nd half began like the first with Sirius attacking well however against the run of play Marys broke to score for 20-16 and all was to play for. Marys continued to press with Atkinson pulling off two great one on one tackles to keep Sirius ahead. Sirius worked their way back up pitch with Whittles and Joseph Coates controlling well, and this led to Tyson-Wilson crashing over, quickly followed by a deserved Elliot try for a 30-16 lead. Sirius then refused Marys a chance to get back in the game and produced a clinical ten minute spell, with Keane Stevenson, Ryan Addinnall, Lomax and Brett Dorley causing problems, supported well by clever play for half from Lewis Hewitt. Thorpe was next over crashing through the defence for his hat-trick try, before Whittles and Stevenson combined to put Addinnall in at the corner, before perhaps the try of the game through Ellliot who broke through and sprinted the length of the pitch to leave the score at 44-16.

Special thanks to Janice Hall for driving the team and Rachel Gay / Jon Flatman for their support with the team.

Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:
