Year 9/10 Girls Rugby League Tournament

[02 May 2013]

The Year 9/10 Girls entered into the Kirklees RLWC Tournament and came out well deserved winners, beating all six teams that they came up against. The venue was Shelley College, Huddersfield, in a 9 – aside full contact competition. The year 9/10 team also consisted of two year 8 girls (Jorden Shakespear and Shauna Jones), who were outstanding playing a year (two years on some occasions) above themselves and did not take a backwards step.

Game 1 – Sirius 4 St John Fisher 2 – Two tries each for Carmen Coates and Paris Turpin, a good start to the tournament, but the defence needed to move up quicker, which was the reason for the two tries being let in.

Game 2 – Sirius 6 Park Lane 0 (Tries: Carmen Coates, Megan Atkinson, Esther Godwin (2), Ebony Hepworth (2)). A much better all round performance, defence being the key, which was a much improved effort from the first game, keeping a clean sheet through hard work and determination. Esther Godwin showed real pace and power for her two long range tries.

Game 3 – Sirius 2 Oldham 1 – in their toughest test of the tournament, against a big Oldham team, Sirius conceded the first try of the match, but responded well, getting two tries in quick succession, both coming from captain Ebony Hepworth. Fine defending out wide from Jordan Longden and Olivia Young, keeping Oldham out on several occasions when they tried to go around us.

Game 4 – Sirius 2 Sally Nook 0 (Tries: Megan Kay and Megan Atkinson), but a special mention to Shauna Jones and Jorden Shakespear who defended and attacked well, proving that they are up to playing a year above themselves.

Game 5 – Sirius 2 All Saints 1, in another tough match, Sirius battled very hard and defended well, the match got very heated, but Sirius kept their cool and concentration and in the final stages of the game Carmen Coates went over for the winner, after Shannon Kay went over in the first minute of the game after a fine scoot from acting half back.

Game 6 – Sirius 3 Shelley 0 – Again it was the defence that stood out for Sirius, with Megan Whittles and Jodie Shimmells leading the way. Two tries for Carmen Coates and one from Shannon Kay ensured that Sirius were the tournament Champions, winning all 6 games, which was some effort!

Please congratulate the girls on their success, performance and attitude throughout the day.
