Year 9 Girls Rugby League
The Year 9 Girls didn’t manage to make it through to the Nationals after a poor start to the tournament. But the girls continue to improve with every game in a very tough Yorkshire Tournament.
Sirius Academy 6 St John Fisher 12
The girls started at a slow pace to the tournament, and the organised and fast St John Fisher side capitalised on this with an early try. Both sides were making errors in the middle of the park in a very scrappy game. Some good runs from Danny Waters and Cameron Shakespear put Sirius in some good field position and a good ball from Mia Husband at dummy half sent Beth Dixon crashing over. Then on the final play of the game St John Fisher found some space out wide to win the game.
Sirius Academy 18 Minsthorpe 0
Sirius were disappointed from their first game and were determined to put it right in the next match, and they did just that, with three impressive tries and a clean sheet. From the kick off debutant Chloe Dunne picked up the ball and passed it to Danny Waters in space, who stepped her way through and showed great speed to get over the tryline. Lauren Sutton was working hard and made some good yards forward as Sirius really got into their stride. Mia Husbands superb draw and pass sent Danny Waters away again for her second try of the match. The defence of Sirius was much better as Cameron Shakespear, Maddison Smith and Ellie Hinchcliffe showed their strength. The best try of the tournament was yet to come as quick hands down the line sent away Holly Dodsworth in the corner for her first try in rugby league. Danny Waters kicked all the conversions to make the scoreline a convincing 18 – 0 victory in a very good team performance.
Sirius Academy 6 Brigshaw 6
For some reason Sirius started to panic in this game and made lots of errors with the ball in hand. Amy Purdon and Ellie Keating had come into the game more and started to take the ball forward well. But as both teams continued to make errors, it was Brigshaw that took their chance and opened the scoring. Credit to the Sirius girls, they continued to work hard to try and get a try back, with Cameron Shakespear and Danny Waters working overtime in attack and defence. Sirius got their rewards when Danny Waters showed her pace and strength to equalise just before the final whistle.
Sirius Academy 0 Temple Moor 6
The Sirius side were starting to tire, and it showed in this game as they were starting to drop off tackles. Unfortunately two of the main players for Sirius, Cameron Shakespear and Danny Waters had to be taken off due to injuries. But the Sirius girls dug in deep but could not hang on as the Temple Moor side went over to clinch their victory, which meant that Sirius would not go on into the National Finals.
The Sirius Year 9 Girls showed a lot of commitment and character in this tournament and if they had of controlled the ball better they know it could have been a different story. This group of girls will continue to work hard and ensure they go one better next year.
