Year 9 overcome the mud to reach RFU Yorkshire Cup 2nd Round!

The Sirius Academy Year 9 Rugby Union team overcame some awful conditions to safely move into the RFU Yorkshire Cup 2nd Round after a 21-3 victory over St John Fisher Catholic school (Harrogate). The match played in a mudbath of a pitch, saw Sirius take control early and never give their opponents a way back into the match. The boys, many of whom were playing their 1st ever game of Rugby Union, showed some good skills but know that there are tougher tests ahead, with Hymers College likely to be their next opponents.

The match saw Sirius battle well in the forwards, Tom Jordan and Year 8 student Declan Jackson worked hard in the middle supported by George Tyson-Wilson. From the back Josh Atkinson looked dangerous with every carry, whilst wingers Callum Whilsher and Kieran Sewell created several half breaks. Early pressure told with quick hands from Josh Kirby finding Year 8 Mikey Lewis who sent Atkinson over with Josh Lomax converting for 7-0. Lewis Hewitt, Joe Petty and Ryan Addinnall moved further into the match, defending strongly with Brad Elliott and Jay Kirkland proving a handful with their size and power. A Fisher handling error saw Lomax produce some quick thinking and kick the ball on to score, with Lewis adding the extras for a 14-0 half-time lead.

The 2nd half saw more of the same with Sirius creating pressure but missing the scoring opportunities. Fisher kicked an early penalty to pull the score back to 14-3, however subs Harry Storr, Robbie Laughton, Connor Cape-Melbourne, Joseph Coates and Renats Surko on his school debut ensured Sirius remained in control. With Luke Moss becoming more involved and Coates providing good distribution, Tyson-Wilson made a good break before finding Atkinson who scored his 2nd with Lomax goaling for the 21-3 win.

Special thanks to Cosi Basile for supporting the team and assisting with them.

Please congratulate the following boys on their success, behaviour and attitude:
