Year 9’s are triumphant in the first round of the Yorkshire cup

[10 Nov 2015]

The year 9’s have played their first match away against Minsthorpe Academy in the Yorkshire cup and ran in a convincing display of 38 points.

The Sirius boys turned up with no previous knowledge of their opponents. However, this didn’t stop them from putting on their best display to date. The game began with a Minsthorpe kick deep into the Sirius half which was received by Joe Kennedy who set the platform for the match. From the off the pressure of the Sirius attack overwhelmed the opponents defence, to gain a repeat set that was followed up with a kick to the corner by Jack Hassard, which was successfully converted with a try from Tom Borman in the corner to take the score 6-0. From the restart on the 3rd tackle just 10 meters out, Brandon sargeson ran a super line to score under the posts and take the score to 12-0. However, the 12 point difference didn’t last long, as the Sirius defence was slow off the mark to let their strong number 12 break the line and go 20 meters to bring the score back to 12-6. After a team talk about defence, the Sirius boys made the necessary improvements to completely cut off the attack of Minsthorpe. This was capitalised on by Taylor Eastwood who ran in 3 tries over the next 20 minutes to increase the score to 26-6 at half time.

The second half began with both teams battling it out to gain an advantage in the armwrestle. With the game seeming fairly even for the initial 10 minutes of the half; the silence was broken as Joe Aitchison tackled everything that moved was rewarded with a storming run off the ruck to score under the posts and extend the lead to 32-6. The boys were playing as a solid team leading from the forwards Brandon sargeson, Joe aitchison and Matty coulter setting the platform throughout. Although, Minsthorpe applied the pressure at different points during the second half which threatened the Sirius line that forced a dropout. With a ‘no tries’ called, the dropout reached the oppositions winger that was met by Taylor Eastwood who wreathed the ball and ran 80 yards to complete the tries  and take the final score to 38-6.

There were some impressive individual displays both in attack and defence from Joe Kennedy, Dylan booth, Harry coulbeck and Jack Hassard throughout.

A big congratulations to:

Joe Kennedy, Harry Coulbeck, Joe Laden, Taylor Eastwood, Tom Borman, Jack Hassard, Dylan Booth, Joe Aitchison, Jackson Davis Barker, Joe Burazin, Brandon Sargeson, Matthew Coulter, Liam Deighton and Ben canvess.
