Quarter-Finals of the Carnegie Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup

[07 Feb 2011]

The Year 10 Rugby team progressed smoothly through to the Quarter-Finals of the Carnegie Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup with a 46-0 victory over Trinity Academy (Calderdale). In difficult windy conditions Sirius played some superb Rugby against a willing Trinity team. Led by half-backs Josh Wood and Jordan Abdull, some excellent tries were scored, non more so then Macaulay Adams who led the way with 5 tries.

The game began with both teams defending well with opportunities at a minimum, however with the likes of Liam Robinson, Ryan Brown and Aidan Armstrong beginning to make good yards, Sirius soon began to take control. An excellent delayed pass from the influential Jansin Turget created an opportunity for James Buttery to show great strength and speed to go close, a quick play the ball gave Abdull the opportunity to use his strength to power over for a 4-0 lead. From the resulting kick-off an 80 metre break from Liam Bilton who then showed great awareness to turn the ball inside to Wood to race over for a Liam Robinson goaled try for a 10-0 lead. Further good work from the forwards, including the impressive Andy Ogden, created the position for Wood to send over Bilton, with Robinson again goaling. One further try before half-time, saw Macaulay Adams use his strength and speed to race away with Robinson goaling for a half-time lead of 22-0.

The second half began in the same manner with Sirius dominating through good defence from the likes of Stephen Batty and Turget. In attack Buttery was causing Trinity all kinds of problems with his speed and great footwork, after Robinson and Dave Lindsay had done the hard work down the middle. This laid the platform for Adams to begin his scoring spree, as he raced in for three further tries in the space of fifteen minutes, with two goals from Robinson and one from insprational substitute Jordan Gant. However Adams saved the best try till last with a 60 metre effort with Jordan Abdull finishing the match with an outstanding touchline conversion.

A good all round team performance with great individual efforts from Adams, Turget, Wood and Abdull.
