Special Educational Needs

Sirius Academy West is an inclusive school that values the abilities of all of its students and that aims to create a fully inclusive ethos and environment. All children, including those with Special Educational Needs have an equal right to expect a broad and varied curriculum, one that meets needs, is appropriate and challenges learners.

Sirius Academy west supports young people who have a wide range of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Alongside quality first teaching we provide a range of interventions. The academy has a sensory room and an inclusion hub as well as providing a range of interventions such as ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support), SALT (Speech and Language Therapy), Lego Therapy and SPLD (Specific Learning Difficulty). Sirius also offers a Shine Club at break and lunch- a safe place for more vulnerable students to enjoy their recreation and develop social skills. We are all committed to raising standards and ensuring that students identified as having a special educational need or disability enjoy a wide range of opportunities, fulfilling their potential and raising aspirations. We ensure that students take pride in their achievements, make progress and are able to develop their abilities and talents.

Shine Club

Shine Club is a warm and welcoming break and lunch time club. Situated in the Yellow Pod within the heart of the school, students enjoy their recreation in a nurturing environment with fewer students. Support staff are on hand to chat with and there is an array of games to play. Shine Club is an excellent way to meet new people, make new friends and to thoroughly enjoy break and lunch time.

Sensory Room

Our sensory room has been created to offer a timetabled and targeted intervention to students with sensory needs. Fully trained by an occupational therapist, our staff aim to support students with their sensory needs by educating them about their sensory diet and offer strategies to support emotional regulation. Interventions range from circuits of activity, to having time in the sensory tent with the weighted blanket. The sensory room offers bespoke intervention for students with the greatest need and allows us to work together to develop strategies to use both in school and at home.
