Airdale Academy 10 Sirius Academy West 32
The Sirius Academy West Year 9 Boys travelled to Airdale Academy in Castleford to play in the first round of the Yorkshire Plate and came away worthy winners with a 32 – 10 victory.
Sirius started in fine form as some great hands down the line from the scrum sent in Ronaldas Sokolovas in the corner to make it 4 – 0 with only a minute played. Jack Mortimer was next to score shortly after when Alfie Marsden made a break and Jack was on hand to support and race over, Keiran Welburn converted to make it 10 – 0. Harry Norton powered his way over on the fifteen minute mark to extend the score even further to 16 – 0 in favour of Sirius Academy. Jack Mortimer once again showed a clean pair of heals as he outpaced the defence to go over for his second try of the match and a lead of 22 – 0. A lapse in concentration in the Sirius defence let Airdale go in just before the break to make the halftime score 22 – 6.
The second half was a scrappy affair, with both teams making plenty of errors in the cold, wet conditions. Robbie Jones found his way over the tryline to make it 26 – 0 but then some complacency crept in and the Sirius side conceded another try to make it 26 – 10. Captain Keiran Welburn had the final say with a nice show and go to score under the sticks, he converted his own try to make the final score 32 – 10. Sirius Academy West will now face Castleford Academy in the next round.
