Year 9 Rugby team march into County Semi-Finals and National qualification!

[15 Jan 2014]

The Sirius Academy Year 9 Rugby League team produced an excellent performance to move into the Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup Semi-Final’s after their 36-8 victory over St Wilfred’s Catholic High (Featherstone). The boys played to a disciplined structure and constantly opened up the Wilfred’s defence with some smart attacking play. The victory also gained the boys qualification to the National stages of the competition, and we now await the draws for the Cups.

The match started well for the team after Wilfred’s gifting Sirius possession and this was made to count with the excellent Jordan Richmond, the joint Players Player of the Match on his debut, sending Josh Lomax over out-wide with Kai Thorpe goaling. Richmond and Harry Whittles combined well for the next try with Ryan Addinall this time been sent over out-wide, Whittles goaled for 12-0. Up-front the forwards in Tom Jordan, Thorpe and Declan Jackson drove the ball forward well, and on the edges Brad Elliott, Jay Kirkland and Mikey Lewis looked dangerous with every touch. Lomax and Addinall both crossed again with a Whittles goal putting Sirius 22-0 up. Josh Atkinson, Luke Moss and Callum Whilsher were returning the ball well, and with little time left in the 1st half, Thorpe, who also claimed the joint Players Player of the Match crossed for his 1st try, with Whittles again goaling for 28-0. The last play of the 1st half saw Wilfred’s grab a try for a 28-4 score-line.

The 2nd half was always going to be tougher as Sirius were going up the sloping pitch, and on the back of several penalties, Wilfred’s crossed again for 28-8. Kieran Sewell and Josh Kirby were distributing the ball well with Brett Dorley and Connor Cape-Melbourne taking the ball up strongly. Sirius settled back into the game and were rewarded with Thorpe grabbing to deserved tries for his hat-trick and a Richmond goal gave Sirius their victory.

Special thanks to Rachel Gay for her support with the team and Cosi Basile for driving the mini-bus and supporting the boys.
