Girls RL Team make it to the National Final for the 4th year running!
The Year 10 Girls went to Warrington to compete in the National RL Finals and managed to win all their games, which will now see them go through to the National Final in London (Wembley Weekend) for their fourth year running. These talented group of girls have managed to make it to the final every year since they joined in Year 7 and will be looking to regain the title of the best team in the country as they take on St John Fisher in August.
Sirius Academy 18 St Benedict 0
Sirius had to start this game with some good defence as the St Benedicts side had two good sets of six in the Sirius half, Amelia Longden and Mia Duke were at the heart of the defence to ensure that the opposition did not go over for an early try. After their kick on the 6th tackle, Kayleigh Waller picked the ball up and went through the broken defensive line to score a full length try. From then on in it was all Sirius, with Mia Duke scooting over to double the lead. Kayleigh Waller went over for her second try of the game after a great run from Molly Bigby who put the Sirius side in good field position. All tries were converted to make the score 18 – 0.
Sirius Academy 24 Bishopstaff 0
Sirius started this game well and once again it was Kayleigh Waller who opened the scoring with a fine individual try. The defence of Sirius was outstanding on their own line with Danny Fulton and Georgia Wardell making some strong tackles. Molly Bigby was next to go over, showing some great footwork and pace to break through the line and go over under the sticks. Sirius again were put under pressure on their own tryline, but after some great speed off the line by Mia Husband that caused Bishopstaff to knock on and she was quick to pick up the loose ball and run 90 metres to touch down for her first try. Kayleigh Waller rounded off the scoring with a superb 24 – 0 victory.
Sirius Academy 18 St Peters 10
Next up for Sirius was the National Champions St Peters, who are a very big, strong side, but Sirius were up for this one and started strong with Mia Duke rounding the defence to go over in the corner on the first set of six. St Peters replied immediately as they went over in the corner showing real strength. The try of the tournament came next for Sirius as the ball went through four pairs of hands in this great move down the left hand side, a great ball from Mia Duke to Kayleigh Waller saw her offload in the tackle to Danny Waters, who got caught just short of the tryline but again performed an outstanding one handed offload to the supporting Emily Andrew who went over for an outstanding team try. St Peters looked to have broke away down the wing which would have leveled the scores, but Mia Husband came up with a superb one on one tackle against their biggest player to ensure they did not go over. Some good yards forward from Danny Fulton and Amelia Longden made good space for Kayleigh Waller to go over again. St Peters scored a late consolation try as Sirius celebrated on the final whistle.
Semi Final – Sirius Academy 18 Astley High 0
Sirius Academy came top of their group so played the second from the other group, Astley High from the North East. Astley started with a good kick off that found touch, so Sirius was put on the back foot to start. But their determined online defence was admirable as they really put their bodies on the line. As soon as Sirius got the ball they attacked well again, and it was Molly Bigby who spotted a gap outwide and went over for a great individual try. Saffron Jones was next to power over from close range as she ran onto the ball with real pace and strength. Shannon Jordan made a big impact when she came on running the ball in well down the middle. The game was sealed in the final stages when Kaylegh Waller jinxed her way through the defence to make the final score 18 – 0 and ensure that Sirius Academy booked their place in the National Final once again.
Please congratulate the squad on their fantastic achievement, they really played well as a team in attack and defence and I could not be more proud of what they have accomplished in Rugby since Year 7. They now turn their attentions to Rugby Union when we travel to Birmingham for the National Finals on Saturday.
