Hull Young Peoples Parliament
Yesterday, 10 students represented the Academy at a Hull Young People’s Parliament event held at the Guild Hall. The event involved students taking part in debates and discussions with students from schools across the city. The first session gave students the opportunity to probe members of the City of Culture team about their plans for upcoming year. Libby Fox posing a particularly interesting question about the possibilities for African dance workshops during 2017. Other students gave quality feedback and suggestions regarding a council plan to develop the year 6/7 transition period.
The afternoon session gave students a chance to debate relevant issue in smaller groups. The topics were centred around ‘making Hull a better place for all’. Groups then had to discuss and present a ‘resolution’ to the issues discussed. In the subsequent voting, one of the resolutions suggested by students from Sirius Academy West (Daniel Hird, Libby Fox and Martyna Sondej) was successful! This resolution will now be carried forward through the Youth Parliament system.
All students impressed the organisers with their polite yet confident approach and represented the Academy in an exemplary manner.
