Humber Inclusive Football Competition
The Humber School Games Inclusive Football competition took place on Wednesday at the Goals Soccer Centre, Hull. Sirius Academy West provided 16 young leaders, officials and coaches to help deliver the festival as well as taking an U13s team along to compete.
The Humber Inclusive Football competition is open to all mainstream and special schools across the Humber region and involves a ‘skills & drills’ morning followed by an afternoon of competitive matches. Our U13s team was selected by Mrs Watson and included Luke Carter, James Tranmer, Sophie Jackman, Isaac Drury, Connor Welburn, Chelsea Keeting, Mohamed Osman Ahmed and Courtney Would. If you teach any of these students please congratulate them on their fantastic effort and determination. After a busy morning of Football training sessions delivered by our Y12 Btec Sport students, the team played in three competitive matches in the afternoon. We won one and lost the other two but the team all left with huge smiles on their faces after receiving a medal and certificate for taking part.
The festival would not have been possible without the help of the new Y12 Btec Sport students. Our students delivered coaching sessions to all the different school teams during the morning. This was particularly challenging because it was their first experience of coaching and leading young children who had a range of learning difficulties and physical disabilities. The students were split into small groups and asked to deliver separate activities as part of a carousel of football coaching drills. This required them to adapt and change their activity depending on which school was taking part and what young people they were responsible for. The afternoon saw their role switch from young coach to young officials. This required them to organise the teams into groups, plan the fixtures and referee the games. I am very pleased to say our students conducted themselves in a professional manner throughout and made the festival extremely enjoyable for all the participants. I received lots of great feedback from other school staff at the festival on the quality of our Y12 leaders. Pete Allison (Disability Football Development Officer at the East Ridinf Football Association) sent me the following message after the event;
“Could you please pass on my thanks to all the young leaders who attending the event yesterday. Without them the event would not have worked as smoothly and as well as it did. The professional attitude and attention they showed the students was brilliant and I certainly see bright futures for all of them.”
Our Y12 Btec Sport students included Paris Hawley, Ebony Hepworth, Jacob Horner, Oliver Russell, Luke Salas, Jodie Shimells, Joseph Wood, Olivia Young, Ryan Hill, Ella Beedham, Megan Atkinson, Megan Kay, Jordan Littlefair, Cameron Morfitt, Thomas Spurgeon and Megan Whittles. Please congratulate these students on their fantastic work.
Thank you also to Mrs Watson, Miss Gay and Miss Barton for their support with our U13s team and Y12 Btec leaders on the day.
