Year 7 team excellent in Marys victory!
The Sirius Academy Year 7 Rugby team rounded off an excellent week of sporting successes with a 24-4 victory over East Hull rivals, St Marys Sports College on Friday evening. The boys were excellent throughout the match, with the level of opposition significantly higher than that they have previously faced. The team now look forward to another friendly match against the highly fancied Archbishop Sentamu Academy in two weeks' time as they finalise preparations for their Yorkshire Cup campaign.
The match started slowly for Sirius with Marys on the front foot with some strong running forwards. With Declan Jackson and Jack Arnott leading the way with some big tackles, and Kieran Bartlett again showing his bravery in the middle of the pitch, Sirius began to grow into the match. Opportunities were hard to find, with Tyler Hackett unlucky not to send the dangerous Jack Scottow away on two occasions. Well marshalled the excellent pairing of Mikey Lewis and Connor Matthews, Sirius took control, and this led to Jackson storming over for a deserved try and a 4-0 lead. With Sirius pressing hard, next over was Lewis who jinked over near the line after great footwork, with Joseph Sedman goaling for a 10-0 lead at half-time.
The 2nd half was a much better overall showing from Sirius. Rhys Purchon and Harrison Longden worked hard in the middle with Dylan Hepworth and Jordan Wornor excellent in defence and attack out-wide. Reece Gooch put in another tremendous display of hard work in defence, and Keane Stevenson proved difficult for Marys to handle with his strong runs. An excellent Luke Moss try created the next try for Sedman, before the outstanding Moss scored a try that his powerful and non-stop running and tackling deserved for a 18-0 lead. Marys battled back and crashed over for a try of their own, before the try of the game and perhaps the seasons through Lewis who stepped through on his own ten metre line before racing the full length of the pitch with Longden goaling for a 24-4 win.
