SIRIUS ACADEMY FOOTBALL SEASON 20112/12l
The 2011-12 football season has been a fabulous one for our boys and girls teams in terms of achieving success from an individual and team points of view. Although rightly overshadowed by the great achievements in Rugby League, Football has come a close second. And it is more rewarding that there are students who have represented both sports equally, and ensured that Sirius Academy was placed firmly on the map in terms of Football and Rugby League, with girls and boys at centres of excellence and also representing the county.
In the Hull Leagues, all five boys’ teams did remarkably well, with the year 7 and 10 teams winning their respective leagues and both teams also remaining unbeaten in their 5 league games. The year 11 and 8 teams came a close second in their respective leagues.
With the years 7 and 10 teams winning their leagues, they played off against the winners of the East Hull League in order to become “City Champions”.
The year 7’s faced a strong Malet Lambert side, who were National Finalists, and due to players missing the game through injury, they were beaten 4-1 despite an admirable team performance. The Year 10’s played Winifred Holtby; and in an exciting game for the neutral, and a tense one for the managers, Sirius overcame themselves in giving a lead away, to then go on and eventually become winners by 4 goals to 2, which deservedly crowned them “City Champions”. The Year 10 team were also entered in the National English Schools Competition, and got through to the second round where they were beaten and unfortunate to meet a strong South Hunsley side at such an early stage in the competition. With the score level at half time, the boys were eventually beaten by a team boasting 4 Hull City Centre of Excellence players.
The Year 8 team managed by Mr. Kay were entered into the Humberside Cup, and battled their way successfully through the stages of the competition beating teams from both Hull and Cleethorpes, to meet St. Marys College in the final. On a horrendous afternoon, our boys adapted to the conditions best and dominated the game, comfortably winning 4-0 with notable performances from Luke Salas, Kieran Bartlett, and Lochlan Fitzgerald.
The year 11 team made up of several Rugby League players had their first success of the year in the Hull Schools 5 a-side competition held at the Gemtec Arena. Having lost to Malet Lambert in their respective league, the two teams once again locked horns in the final, and with some tactical changes and a more positive approach, the boys ensured the previous result was overturned and Sirius were winners. Having unfortunately finished runners up in the league, they made up for this in the Hull Schools Cup by beating our rivals Malet Lambert, and then Sydney Smith in the semis, to then play Winifred Holtby in the final. After a nervous start, the team got into shape and ran out deserved winners 4-1 with notable performances from Richard Moy, Jordan Abdull, William Collier, Jason Norfolk and Liam Gordon to name but a few.
The year 11’s then due to their Cup success, had reached the semi-finals of the Humberside Cup where they played Howden School. Unfortunately many of the boys had to play in the same week as their Rugby League Yorkshire Cup Final game. The team were down 0-2 by half time, but showed great resilience to come back to 2-2 with two goals from Josh Wood and should have won the game in normal time. However the game went into extra time and unfortunately Sirius lost 2-3.
A fabulous season for the Year 11 boys who played both sports.
A special mention to Richard Moy who represented the Under 16 Humberside National Side, who were crowned English Schools FA East Midlands Champions.
This year also the establishment of a Sixth Form Team under the guidance of Colin Brooks. The team was made up of year 11,12 and 13 students and in their only game to date they beat South Hunsley by five goals to three.
Sirius Girl’s Football
Sirius’ girl football has been well represented this year at U.13 and U.16 level.
U13
The U13 girls have entered a 5-aside/7aside/ and 11 aside tournaments this year. The girls managed to gain 3rd place in the 7 and 11 aside tournaments. Most of the players are now playing for established teams outside of school.
U16
Again the U16 have entered the three main tournaments this year. They managed to secure a place in the finals during the 11 aside tournament and gained second place. In the 5aside tournaments they also managed to secure 3rd position. Again the majority of girls are now playing for established teams after school.
