Sirius Academy U18 Girls College team crowned East Yorkshire RU Champions

[22 Mar 2017]

The newly formed Sirius Academy West Girls College Rugby Team came out as champions of East Yorkshire with two convincing wins at the Driffield RU competition. A lot of the girls were new to rugby union, but after a good training session last week the girls knew that they could turn their rugby league skills across with ease. Special mentions must go to the girls who have never played any form of rugby before but did extremely well in their first ever competition – Ella Beedham, Lauren Clark and Angelika Bobkovica.

Wolfreton 1 Sirius Academy West 11
Sirius Academy West won their first game with ease as they ran in 11 tries against Wolfreton. First to go over for a try on her debut was Lauren Clark, who showed real power and strength to over for the opener. Melissa Tulley went over shortly after with another powerful run that the Wolfreton defence could not handle. Sirius also showed great handling skills as captain Shauna Jones offloaded a great pass to Aimee Harris for her to go in at the corner. Paige Fletcher went over for two tries in quick succession, showing real speed to outpace the defence. The very impressive Megan Kay was looking good from the acting half back position and a clever scoot saw her find the gap and go over for her first try. Shauna Jones showed her experience as she stepped her way through the Wolfreton defensive line to make it 7 – 0. Debutants to rugby –  Ella Beedham and Angelika Bobkovica were gaining in confidence and seeing more of the ball as the game went on. Wolfreton got over for a try of their own, but after that it was all Sirius, with Lauren Clark, Melissa Tulley, Aimee Harris and Megan Kay all going over again to make the final score 11 – 1.

Woldgate 2 Sirius Academy West 5
Woldgate were a lot more of a threat to the Sirius side, as they didn’t have it all their own way in this game. A lot of the Woldgate girls play rugby union on a regular basis so were more experienced in the rucks and mauls, but the Sirius girls showed other qualities in abundance as they took an early lead through Megan Kay. Sirius doubled their lead, again Megan Kay spotting the gap and going through it to score her second of the game. Woldgate replied back well to get back into the game, but the Sirius side were not about to let this one slip as Jodie Shimmels, Emily Savage and Megan Whittles took the ball up well in the middle of the park to make space outwide for Aimee Harris to go over in the corner. The lead was extended further when Shauna Jones put Paige Fletcher through a gap to make it 4 – 1. Woldgate crashed over from close range, but it was Sirius who had the final word as Megan Kay rounded off her hat-trick to make it 5 – 2 in a very tough and skilful match.

The talented Sirius Academy West College Team will now go on and represent the East Yorkshire region as they travel across to York next Wednesday for the Yorkshire Finals.
