Sirius Successful in the National Cup
Sirius Successful at South Axholme in the National Cup!!
Away in the National Cup to last year’s semi-finalists South Axholme, we knew from the off it was going to be a tough game. it was an intense first half, with tackles flying in from both sides, but we stood our ground and came out on top. First half we went down 1-0 but equalised straight away through Omak with a lovely side foot finish from a pinpoint Turner cross. They went up again to make it 2-1. 5 minutes before the end a tussle in the box saw J. Last fouled, the referee immediately pointed to the spot.
PENALTY! Up steps Morrill who converts with a coolly placed finish into the bottom corner.
Half Time – 2-2.
2nd half started in a much calmer fashion and some outstanding football from both sides was on view. It was end to end with spells of dominance from both teams. We went up for the first time in the game with an outstanding strike from outside of the box from J. Last. The boy only scores screamers! They quickly equalised to make it 3-3, and once again the game resumed end to end. With attacking football on display it was a pleasure to watch both sides creating chances. They went up again to make it 4-3 but our grit, determination and industry lead us to an equaliser a few minutes from end. Great work from Watts down the right hand side, driving past their defender and finding J. Last’s feet inside the box. With a great touch and a clever layoff from our centre forward, teed up Omak who was in the right place at the right time – again – to finish smartly in the corner. 4-4.
Extra time made no difference and it was on to… Dreaded penalties!!
However the size of our keeper Fletcher, was definitely in the oppositions heads. We went on to successfully dispatch all of our penalties through, Hartley, Omak, Morrill and Brooks- with a Martial like postage stamp finish – to see us through to the next round!!
Well done to all the boys on their win against very good opposition.
