Sirius Year 9’s Win A Dramaticl Hull Schools Football Semi-Final
In a most dramatic semi-final the Year 9 Sirius Football Team beat St.Mary’s College 4-2 on penalties in extra-time to
ensure they take their place in the final against Malet Lambert.
In a game which was well matched and a great advert for school’s football the game was played in a spirited fashion by
both sides which meant entertainment and excitement!
Sirius led by Adam Kelsey took the game to St.Mary’s from the start and dominated the game and were rewarded late in
the first half with Kelsey himself hitting the bar from distance and the effort rebounding straight down and was closely followed
and put into the net by Joe Boxhall . This was just reward for the efforts that Sirius had created.
Defensively the team were well organised through Stephen Pougher in goal, Jak Langley, Kia Thorpe(playing his first game), Adam Kelsey,
and Jamie Gould. In midfield Josh Jarvis, Alex Appleby, Dominic Litwinski, and Alfie Pougher working tirelessly in midfield. Up front Joe Boxhall
and Martin Jude defended from the front.
With a slender lead of 1-0 the game followed the same pattern as the first with Sirius having most of the possession but were caught
by a superb penetrating ball against the run of play and St.Mary’s were level.
Sirius introduced their subs in Harry Knight, Brad Elliott, and Connor Cape-Melbourne and tried everything to win the game but to no avail.
The game ended in a draw and that meant extra-time.
This is when the real drama started with St.Mary’s taking the lead in the second period of extra-time. With only three minutes left
could we respond? Was the game lost? We did not deserve to lose!
Desperation measures with players driven forward! Sirius still ‘fighting’ until the end! A corner was won. Driven by Martin Jude the ball
was met by a wall of players but fortunately met by the head of one of our players. Josh Jarvis? Adam Kelsey? Who cares we were level!
2-2 ! A deserved result ! Penalties to follow!
With careful consideration five penalty takers were chosen for the ‘lottery’ of penalties. Appleby,Gould,Kelsey.Jarvis and Jude.
St.Mary’s missed their first and the second was saved by Stephen Pougher. With cool heads our ‘chosen few’ calmly slotted all four penalties!
The best taken penalties I had seen at school boy level. Celebrations erupted!
The boys will now play Malet Lambert on Thursday the 10TH April at 4.00 p.m at the Hull University playing fields.
A boy that needs to be mentioned is Kane Tock who was sub- goalkeeper who sat out the game but supported the rest of the team and has a great
attitude.
