Success continues for the Year 8 Girls Rugby Team
The Sirius Academy Year 8 Girls carried on their success from being crowned the best Rugby Union Team at Twickenham at the weekend, as they have now reached the National Final of the Rugby League competition too, facing last years opponents St Peters again. This also means that the girls will be parading rounding Wembley, as they did last year.
The National tournament at Oulton Raiders saw the girls in a league of 4 teams, including Richmond park, Seaton Sluice and Wade Deacon. All games would be 13 minutes straight through.
Sirius Academy 28 Richmond Park 0
Sirius started the tournament well, Molly Bigby was first over with a fine long range try, Vicky Godwin showed her strength and speed to go over for two tries, before captain Mia Duke went over and then Kaylaigh Waller went over for the last try of the match. The Sirius defence was as fierce as ever, with some superb tackles being made. Sirius looked very well organised and there was no way through for the Richmond park side.
Siirius 30 Seaton Sluice 4
Again Sirius ran in five tries in the match, Kayleigh Waller going over straight from the kick off, bursting through any would be tackles and showing speed to go over for a full length try, Mia Duke scored two tries in quick succession, again going full length of the pitch with some good scoots from the acting half back position. Saffron Jones, Amelia Longden and Georgia Wardell were all working hard in defence, putting in some big hits. Molly Bigby got on the scoresheet again before Kayleigh Waller rounded off the scoring for Sirius.
Sirius 12 Wade Deacon 0
The toughest test of the day came from Wade Deacon, who had some good strong, fast players, but Sirius were determined to make it to the semi final play off, and they did it in style with a solid display. Mia Duke went over for the first try. Wade Deacon worked hard to get into some good areas, but the defence of the Sirius team was too organised and strong. To seal the game Kayleigh Waller went over, ensuring that Sirius Academy topped their group.
Semi Final – Sirius Academy 30 Leigh Academy 0
Sirius were really up for the semi final, which would see them once again through to the National Final at Richmond and a weekend at Wembley. Leigh Academy could not cope with the speed, skill and strength of the Sirius team as Sirius went over for five tries in the 13 minute match. Captain Mia Duke led by example in attack and defence, running in a hat-trick of tries. Kayleigh Waller was on fire in defence and probably tackled every player on the opposing team. Molly Bigby got over for a couple of good tries during this match, to cap off a superb Sirius performance and book their place at Wembley for their second year running!
Please congratulate the Sirius Academy year 8 Girls on a very successful weekend. They are not only the National Champions at Rugby Union, they are one step away from being the National Champions in Rugby League.
