Table-Tennis Success

[24 Jun 2012]

Three years ago the Academy’s table-tennis club linked with the Hull City Premier League 4 Sport initiative. Premier League 4 Sport is an innovative Premier League funded project to promote & develop opportunities for young people to get involved in community based olympic sports. There are hub sites in different schools in the area for Table-Tennis, Judo, Badminton and Volleyball.

The extended exposure and specialised Table-Tennis coaching has seen the Academy’s table-tennis club flourish and experience success in both local and regional competitions this year.

The U16 squad continued their recent success by prevailing at the Humberside Table-Tennis Finals at St. Mary’s. The quartet of boys were able to defeat strong challenges from Hornsea, Wolfreton, St. Mary’s and two Grimsby schools to book their place in the Regional Finals in Billingham.

The team led by James Garrod, before he attended an England Talent Camp for Table-Tennis that weekend, and strongly supported by Daniel Taylor, Ari Sharif and Mitchell Levi-Lewis produced some excellent performances throughout the afternoon against some difficult and experienced opponents.

In January, the Academy experienced individual success at the ESTTA Individual Championships, as James Garrod (Runner-Up) and Rebecca Taylor (Winner) starred in the annual Humberside tournaments.

Danny (Y11) and Rebecca Taylor (Y9) both qualified for the National Fred Perry Urban Cup by defeating other students from the region. As a result they had the opportunity to represent the club in London last weekend and compete against finalists from other Premier League clubs in the country. The students combined with two other students from the area to finish 3rd out of the 22 competing clubs.

The successful Table-Tennis club is available to all students on a Monday evening at 3.05pm in the Sports Hall.
