#ThisWeekatSAW – 15th September 2023

[15 Sep 2023]

Message from the Head of School:

Our first full week of 2023-2024 academic year was a great success. The students look incredibly smart and have started the year off well.

I had the pleasure of visiting some lessons last week and I was very impressed and proud of the student’s attitude to learning. Students are demonstrating a positive attitude and determination to succeed.

Our enrichment and extracurricular activities have started and we always encourage all children to participate. Please encourage your child to try something new and join a club or a team. Next week Mr Gordon will address the students in assembly to launch our Personal Development programme and Sirius Academy Pledges, again please encourage your child to complete as many as possible.

Attendance will always remain a high priority; all students should be attending all sessions every day unless there are authorised reasons. There is a direct link between attendance and outcomes, it’s important we are proving our students the best chances to succeed.

The academy has social platforms where news and celebrations of success are shared including the progress of our sports teams. Please check our Twitter and Facebook as well as our academy website to remain up to date on all events.

MyEd app

This issue is still ongoing. We have made some progress this week and teachers should be showing on timetables on the MyEd app and we are continuing to work to resolve the issues.

Homework

The first homework detentions will be set this week. The homework platforms are SPARX for Maths and SENECA for all other core subjects. Homework tasks are set to a manageable amount and will be checked weekly.

Each year group will have its own check day, and any students who have not completed their homework by this day will be placed into a homework detention on that evening. The year group check days are:

Year 7- Thursday
Year 8- Monday
Year 9- Tuesday
Year 10- Wednesday
Year 11- Friday

Please ensure you try to support your child in setting effective routines in when to complete homework. ICT access is available before, during and after school in the Learning Resource Centre. There is a space at the front of the student planner for students to write usernames for log-in.

This week the students discussed the topic of ‘Are you scared of failure?’

Character Education

Character Education is a time-tabled lesson within our Lesson 1 curriculum in which students focus on skills and traits which will allow them to be successful in not only their academic studies but also in other aspects of their life.

Year 7 have had their introduction lesson into Character Education, focused around one of our mantras ‘Qualifications will get you an interview. Character will help get you the job’.

Year 8 have started their new module focused on ‘No Limits’ goal setting. Students looked at the core areas in which they will be setting goals in.
