U13s Girls Rugby Union – March 2015
After the success of the U13 girls rugby union team in the East Yorkshire Stages, the next step for them was the Yorkshire Tournament at Wetherby. Unfortunately the girls were missing two influential players for this competition as Shannon Jordan and Beth Dixon, who bring more height and strength to the team were both unavailable.
Sirius Academy 6 Featherstone 4
Sirius Academy started the tournament well, going over for three tries in quick succession, with two from Danielle Waters and one for Amy Purden. Featherstone scored a try of their own before Holly Bateson went over in the corner and then Caitlin Curzons crashed over to extend the lead. Featherstone again had a fight back with three quick tries to put the Sirius team under a bit of pressure in the late stages, but captain Amy Purden sealed the victory with a fine individual try.
Sirius Academy 6 St John Fisher 1
Sirius made the second game easy, as they put in a very good team performance. The defence was looking solid with Cameron Shakespear and Mia Husband making some good tackles. In attack it was Amy Purden and Danielle Waters who were dangerous going forward, with St John Fisher unable to cope with their speed and agility as Purden went over for four tries and Waters for two.
Sirius Academy 4 King Edwards 3
The toughest test for Sirius so far in the tournament was King Edwards, but again Sirius started the game well, with Alicia Pearson and Lauren Sutton showing good support play and making good yards forward. Amy Purden went over for the first try and Danielle Waters went over to double the lead shortly after. King Edward came back with a try of their own before Waters went over for two superb solo full length of the field tries. A late comeback from King Edwards saw them score a couple of late tries to make the scoreline look a lot closer than the game actually was.
Sirius Academy 2 Settle College 4
Sirius needed to win the last game to go through the final as Settle had won all of their three previous matches. Unfortunately Cameron Shakespear had picked up a knock so had to sit this one out. Danielle Waters made a good start to the game and went over for their first try. But from then on in it was Settle that dominated, with a couple of big strong players causing the problems, and to make this worse Amy Purden had to leave the field with an injury. Credit to Sirius though, they did not throw in the towel and Danielle Waters again went over again before the final whistle.
Please congratulate the squad on their success, attitude and behaviour, they were very unlucky not to make the finals, but the improvements of this team has been immense and I am sure next year they will go even further in all their rugby competitions:-
