U14 Rugby Union: Sirius fall to a well drilled Hymers line up.
Hymers College travelled west down Springbank to play a Sirius Academy team pieced together by a mixture of year 8’s and 9’s all with varying experience. We scraped together enough players for a starting line-up and no subs, to face a team who travelled with 20 players and are using this fixture as a warm-up game for upcoming European tournaments.
First half
From the opening kick-off Hymers looked organised and well drilled, scoring within the first few minutes of the game. Leon Stewart did well to equalise following a great pick and drive 40 meters out brushing off the Hymers defence, making the score 7-7 almost immediately after the restart (video below). Shortly after Stewart’s great try, Sirius almost took the lead after an inch perfect kick by Sam McAuley spiralled 20 yards into the path of Leon Dallee who unfortunately knocked on when he looked certain to score, the helpless Hymers defence looked on as their parents exorcized a collective sigh of relief.
Hymers controlled the pace of the game, rucking well and making Sirius work hard. In the end ill-discipline and eagerness to win saw Sirius give away reckless penalties which led to Hymers executing set pieces and scoring tries.
Second half
Despite being down 4 tries to 1 in the second half, the boys showed great inner-fight to keep battling. Ali “the savage” Alsheriefe was rampant in midfield making yards tackling and making Hymers think twice about trying to stop him. Captain Tom Wilkinson was back to his best leading by example and giving everything to get the Sirius Attacking moves going.
Towards the end of the game a second Sirius try was scored following a great lineout steal by Tom Wilkinson, which led to Sam McAuley finding Leon Stewart who raced 30 yards finishing between the sticks.
Final score
In the end a disjointed Sirius team were heavily dependent on individual moments of brilliance from Sam McAuley, Leon Stewart, Ali Alshereife, Tom Wilkinson and Connor Foster but a lack of team work and complacency concluded in Sirius losing 5 tries to 2 with the match ending 31-14 to Hymers.

Many positives can be drawn from this fixture if you compare the experience and facilities at disposal over at Hymers, but the lads know they could have gone an extra yard to give the opposition a much trickier game.
