Under 15 Rugby union team- 2nd best in the country!
Over the weekend the under 15 rugby union team travelled to Birmingham to play in the national finals. They had worked hard at the local and regional stages of the competition to beat all of their rivals to secure themselves a place in the national finals; and after being beaten into second place last year on the pitch at Twickenham the girls were determined to gain back the title of best team in the country.
The team were focused from the start and they knew that they needed to win all of the games in the group stages to get through to the 1st/2nd play-off match. Sirius were drawn in an extremely hard group however the girls dug deep and displayed some excellent team work and scored some excellent tries. They were up against teams twice their size however their strong defensive lines and determination saw them sail through to the finals.
Sirius 2 St Marys 1 (tries scored by Kayleigh Waller and Amelia Longden)
Robert Clack 0 Sirius 1 (Try scored by Kayleigh Waller)
Sirius 3 Coppleston 3 (The girls came back from 3-1 to draw this match. A great display of team work. Tries: Kayleigh Waller x2 and Amelia Longden)
Liskeard 0 Sirius 3 (Tires Kayleigh x2 and Molly Bigby)
St Pauls 1 Sirius 3 (Tries Mia Duke and Kayleigh Waller x 2)
Final: Priestland 3 Sirius 0
Sirius went on to the pitch focused and ready to win back their national rugby union title. They were up against a very strong and well drilled team; many of whom play rugby union for club teams. Despite the girls best efforts they could not break Priestland’s defensive line and through a few mistakes from the Sirius team the opposition were able to find gaps to score some tries past the girls. The girls knew this would be a tough game and the score does not reflect the hard work, teamwork and determination shown throughout.
The Sirius team were a credit to the Academy and it was lovely to see so many parents come and support the girls as they have worked hard to get to this stage. To say only 2 of the team play regular rugby union for clubs they have done themselves and the Academy proud. The girls are now the 2nd BEST RUGBY UNION TEAM in the country which is an incredible achievement.
Please congratulate the girls as they have given up a lot of time and put a lot of effort into training for this.
