Y11 Football: Sirius 1 – St. Marys 3

[27 Sep 2013]

The Y11 Football team battled admirably last night against the 2011 and 2012 Hull Schools’ League and Cup Winners St. Mary’s. Despite the late withdrawal of a number of key players the team persevered and were unlucky not to claim something from the game.

Sirius were able to thwart St. Mary’s on a number of occasions in the opening 30mins thanks to the solid partnership of Damian Radke and George Woodhead in defence and able support from Ryan Carrington and Connor Boyce. It was Josh Iles on debut in goal though that excelled. Producing a number of fine saves and dominating his goal area.

Sirius began to grow into the game and Connor Giddings, James Garrod and Ryan Holden in midfield began to wrestle some control back from St. Mary’s. Two strong runs from Giddings led to two excellent opportunities and a fierce Holden drive was palmed away by the goalkeeper.

However, 5mins before Half-Time St. Mary’s struck the first goal when industrious play from the right winger crossed the ball into the area and the St. Mary’s forward was able to finish with ease. St. Mary’s doubled their lead half-way into the second-half when the ball was forced in from close range with Sirius unable to clear.

Sirius struck back immediately with a fantastic through ball from Brandon Green set Kai Carrington clear and he finished past the on-rushing goalkeeper. Sirius began to press with urgency and the second goal soon came when excellent play from Holden provided Carrington with another chance that he crashed against the crossbar. Holden, Green, Burgess and Giddings all went close again as Sirius sensed an equaliser.

With time running out a St. Mary’s counter led to the decisive third goal as the rangy striker lofted the ball over Isles into the net to finally finish any hopes of a Sirius equaliser.

Please congratulate all the boys for their outstanding effort and commitment last night.

Squad: Iles, R Carrington, Radke, Woodhead, Green, Boyce, Garrod, Giddings, Holden, Burgess, K Carrington and Lambert.

The Y11s will attempt to continue their good form against Trinity next week.
