ESFA National Cup 5th Round
On Friday afternoon the last remainnig year group to represent Sirius West still in the National Cup made their furthest away journey to date, up the M62 to take on Minsthorpe Community College in the 5th round of the Y7 National Cup.
There was an excitement in the air as the boys prepared for what would be their toughest challenge to date. The game was a cagey affair with both teams battling tough, windy conditions but it was SAW who made the breakthrough with Alfie MAskell powerfully driving on from midfield before laying the ball out left to Lucas Forlow who displayed some scintillating quick feet to cut inside and bang it low and hard to the keepers right…1-0.
Half time saw changes as Theo Mainprize came on and didn’t take long to settle as his left wing rung culminated in a tidy ball inside to Filip Szkoda who out muscled his defender to swivel, touch out his feet and hit a ferocious effort high to the keepers right…2-0! Nothing silly and we might just pull this off!!
However, you don’t get to the 5th round of the national cup without being a threat, Minsthorpe pulled one back with a long range effort which few keepers of this age would have had a chance of preventing…2-1, nerves jangling once again.
THe next 10 minutes went by at a crawl with half chances for both sides until Alfie Maskell gained possession on the the halfway line turned and again drove at the Minsthorpe defence…past 1…past 2…myself and Mr Gordon I’m sure both whiserping to ourselves “hit it” which he did and WHAT A HIT! The ball fired across the keeper into the top right of the goal 3-1!!
The remaining minutes ticked away but the boys performed brilliantly to see it out.
Onto the 6th round!
