Y7s Finish Season On High

[06 May 2015]

The Y7 football team finished their inaugural season off in style last night defeating The Boulevard Academy on penalties after normal time, extra time and ten goals were not enough to separate the sides.

Having already defeated their opponents earlier in the season, knocking them out of the first stages of the the Hull Schools Cup, the two teams were drawn together again in the final of the Plate. Both teams put on an entertaining battle in difficult conditions with a feast of goals for the large number of students, parents and teachers in attendance.

Sirius were forced to play into the strong wind for the first half and were limited to playing on the counter attack. They responded exceptionally to going going behind twice with both equalisers coming from Charlie Shooter. The first a measured finish after been played through by the industrious Harry Blackham, and the second a deft header from a perfect Jack Brown cross.

With the advantage of the wind in the second half Sirius began to dominate and the constant pressure and hard-running of Charlie Shooter forced an opposing defender to steer into his own net for 3-2. Unfortunately, as has been a common theme throughout their first season, the momentum was short lived as two quick fire goals from The Boulevard, bringing rapturous celebrations from their large number of staff in attendance, looked to have sealed the victory. With minutes remaining Leon Stewart fired a free-kick, from over 40yrds, straight into the top corner to force extra-time.

The Boulevard’s key player and standout performer was first to score again during the first-half of extra-time with a well deserved third goal. Sirius refused to surrender and continuously searched for parity. Time looked to be running out as Elliot Pashley fired over from close range and Harry Gould whipped a free-kick over the bar. However, in the dying minutes of the additional time Leon Stewart stepped up for another long distance free-kick. In a replica of his first attempt the ball thundered into the top corner for 5-5 and penalties!

Leon Stewart fired the ball into the corner for 1-0 as The Boulevard rolled their first penalty wide. Lewis Wilson’s exceptional save diving to his left was then supported by Harry Gould calmly sliding his penalty into the corner for 2-0. Two misses for each school sandwiched a goal for the opponents to see the score move to 2-1. With one penalty remaining for each team and The Boulevard needing to score Lewis Wilson capped a fine individual season in goal with another match winning save.

Please congratulate the boys for their continued hard work this season, that has seen some mixed results, but has definitely provided some optimism for future seasons. The support from their parents and families at every match has been greatly appreciated.
