Y9 Boys Football 1/2 Final
Sirius West v Malet Lambert 3/5/17
Due to a series of illness and injuries the squad was down to the bare bones as messrs Gordon, Renier and myself plotted to negotiate the final hurdle in our quest for cup glory. With 10 this would take some doing!
It was a nightmare start as miscommunication at the back allowed the Malet striker to nip in and finish past a stranded Wilson in goal. 1-0 down…much work to do.
It was a deficit which the boys were able to quickly close as some tremendous play between the forward line was finished excellently by the arriving Blackham 1-1 game on!
WONDER GOAL! The boys were on fire as again some smart by Stewart presented the ball to Blackham wide on the right wing. He shimmied and shaked before cutting inside and hitting a glorious 25 yard curling effort into the top left corner. What a finish…2-1 to the men in green.
The game continued to ebb and flow as Malet themelves rallied and scored a quickfire double to go into half time 3-2 up. Game far from over but it was hanging in the balance.
The halftime scoreline did not deter the boys but it did perhaps give them more impetus to unload some long range efforts. Hussain would make his effort count by hitting a thrilling effort from long range. 3-3, we were getting treated to some glorious goal today!
Again the numbers advantaged told for Malet as they made us pay with another 2 goals in quick succession. 5-3 down but it was still early in the 2nd half and time was on our side.
With the game seemingly out of reach Mukelenge was the next one to have a pop from distance. The trend of fine goals continued as his effort from the corner of the box found the far corner and gave us a glimmer of hope again.
The hope was short lived with Malet netting their 6 of the day, 6-4 surely game over now?
Stewart, however, disagreed and gave us yet another avenue of recovery when he scored to make it 6-5.
With tired legs and minds taking their toll Malet were able to seal it and see the game out with an eventual scoreline of 7-5.
Credit to both sets of players and the Sirius lads who gave it their all but it was just not to be on the day. Perhaps some defensive work on the training ground might increase our chances for next season….
