Y9 Match Report: Sirius Academy 3 – Kelvin Hall 5
The Sirius Academy Y9 Football team crashed out of the Hull Schools Cup one game away from the KC Stadium tonight despite a valiant effort against the reigning champions from the previous two seasons Kelvin Hall.
The boys’ task was made even more difficult prior to kick-off with the late withdrawals from the squad of 5 players, leaving only 10 players available for selection.
The Academy were rewarded for starting extremely brightly with a goal in the first few minutes. A direct ball from Will Antcliffe bypassed the Kelvin defence and allowed Ryan Holden to nip in before the goalkeeper and finish to give the Academy a 1-0 lead.
To prove this wasn’t a fluke the boys continued to control the opening moments and almost doubled the lead when two Mitchell Levi-Lewis free-kicks cannoned off the crossbar and were scrambled away.
Despite the early pressure, Kelvin began to grow into the game, and aided by their extra man, started to create some opportunities. Brandon Green and James Garrod defended manfully, and Will Antcliffe made two outstanding last-ditch tackles to protect the Academy’s lead.
However, two quick goals before Half-Time ensured that Kelvin led 2-1 at the interval. The first being very fortunate as an attempted clearance by James Garrod ricocheted off the arm of a Kelvin forward only to fall at his feet for an easy tap-in.
As the threat of a Kelvin third goal began to diminish the Academy started to regain some control and always looked dangerous with the strong running of Ryan Holden, McKinley Swire and Kai Carrington. With 15mins to go one of these runs forced a Kelvin defender into a rash challenge on the edge of area. Mitchell Levi-Lewis stepped up to fire the resulting free-kick into the bottom corner of the net.
Spurred on by this goal, Kelvin answered back within a minute with a goal to lead 3-2, only for Matthew Meakin to pull the Academy back into the game with an equaliser in the closing minutes after excellent work by Kai Carrington.
As the boys settled for what looked like extra-time, and potentially penalties, a Kelvin attacker raced into score as the boys waited expectantly for an offside decision in their favour. Unfortunately, this wasn’t to be, and deflated by the fourth goal conceded again with the last kick of the game.
Please congratulate the boys for their outstanding attitude and effort.
Thanks to Simon Jewitt for supporting the boys in the second half.
